Some hints for Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms. The game changes fast, so this guide may be outdated in some or more points. Artemis formation General List of possible supporters Blooshi Artemis Kent, Antrius, Commodore Krux Dhadius, Valentine Evelyn Jim, Catti-brie Nrakk, Duke Ravengard, Jang Sao Birdsong Torogar Nova, Strix, Rust Zorbu, Bobby A Grand Tour of the Sword Coast Torogar Birdsong Valentine Zorbu Jim Blooshi Kent Nova Artemis Specialisations: Blooshi - Sliced Soul + Resilient Spirit / Alternatives: NERDS, Evelyn Artemis - Kent - Potent Poison / Alternatives: Antrius, Commodore Krux Valentine - All Hail the God Brain / Alternatives: Nrakk, Jang Sao Jim - Fan Club / Alternatives: Catti Brie Birdsong - Theme of Deception (right, evil) + Soptrano (middle, female) Torogar - Tiamat's Rage (right) Nova - Tight Knit Zorbu - Lead the pack Unlock Wren To unlock Wren you have to beat the variant "Twice Through the Grat Wheel" of the adventure "Titan on the Town" in the town "Sylvania" on the "Sigil" map of the campaign "Turn the Fortune's Wheel". If you have a lot of power, this variant might be very easy for you. This guide is for people, that have some power, but struggle a little with this variant. Power depends on the item levels and legendary levels of your champions, so this guide may not work for you. Variant text "You may only use Neutral Champions and Champions of the alignment(s) specified below. For the first 100 areas, you may use Lowful Good champions. Every 100 areas, this restriction changes: Neutral Good for area 101-200. Chaotic Good for area 201-300, and so forth. This restirction is linked to your highest area completed, not your current area. Every 100 areas, all Champions in the formation are removed and can't be used for the rest of the adventure. Champions can't otherwise be removed from the formation once they've been added. ..." Hints You will need to own nearly every champion in the game (this will be outdated some day) Be careful, where you use your Neutral Neutral champions. You may need them for later areas. They are marked bold below. Be careful to not add a wrong champion to the formation, you cannot remove them Be careful with familiars on leveling, they may place unwanted champions You can test and prepare your teams in the adventure "Titan on the Town" If need just a little more power on areas, upgrade legendary level to 1 for some of the used champions (see below). Some champions will not be very valuable, but at least they can carry legendaries. Level 1 is not so expensive. Use your ultimates on the bosses, e.g. the Gargantuan Owl Use event and/or weekend buffs for further power Over the time, when there will be more champions, this variant will become easier Area 1-100 (Lawful Good 1) Be careful to not use the champions needed for level 801-900 use - Celeste Nayeli Sentry - Dungeon Master (no extra champ!) - - Drizzt - - - This should be easy Area 101-200 (Neutral Good 1) Be careful to not use the champions needed for level 901-950 use only Bruenor Solaak - - - Sgt. Because of the restrictions, the useable champions will change over time. Therefore the suggested formations will be outdated soon. Variants have additional restrictions, that may make the suggested formations not useable. You may try to adapt, but that isn't possible always. Formations April 2024 Wylly Wonka The idea is, to have Wyll buff NERDS with Folk Hero. To get the max of four stacks, you must have one additional champion each for at least four of NERDS classes (Fighter / Ranger / Bard / Cleric / Rogue / Wizard). No other class has to have more than two champions. A Grand Tour of the Sword Coast Gazrick Astarion Lae'zel NERDS BBEG Karlach Wyll Valentine Shadowheart Specialisations: 1. Astarion 11. The Dark Urge 12. Wyll Ceremorphosis Feat Some other champions have a feat, that, when used, adds a ceremorphosis stack. Most of them are "Heroes of Baldur's Gate". 3. Dynaheir 5. The House Always Wins - Strategy idea Strategy idea for "The House Always Wins" in Vecna campaign Because of the randomness of this variant, we cannot create a strategy that will always work. All we can do, is raise the odds. This is an idea for an strategy that raise you chances to be able to use certain champions in the areas 1101 to 1150. It is not fully developed yet. Maybe it isn't good at all. I have already found out, that the chances, this strategy works out isn't that great. It's estimated 1/3 (with lots of approximations). That isn't great, Preparation You need a lot of power to be able to use this strategy. Create two formations with 8 champions that can beat area 1150. You can test that in the free play of that variant "The Rod of Seven Parts". We call them formation 1 and formation 2. Spit both of them into two parts of 4 champions. We call them quads. We name the squads red 1 (1R) and black 1 (1B) for formation 1 and 2R, 2B for formation 2. Make sure that the red squads do not share any seat with the black squads, e.g. it 1R uses slot 5, then 2B must not use slot 5. Each part should contain a tank. Be careful with the formation layout. Make sure the formations work without the green slots. Play Try to get to area 901 using only champions that aren't in formation 1 or 2. Same for the green places. In Area 901, if the ball lands on red, put three champs of 1R into the free red slots of the formation. If the ball wasn't on red before, you can put the fourth champ of R1 into the slot, where the ball was before. if the ball lands on black, do the same with 1B. In the following tree, going left means red has to be replaced and going right means black has to be replaced. "1R" means, put in the red 1 part (1R) of formation 1. "XX" means, this strategy did not work out, sorry. All other branches would end in either formation 1 or formation 2, if there wasn't one slot blocked by the ball. In reality you will end up with "mostly" formation 1 or formation 2. The strategy idea is not yet fully developed. Area any 901 / 1R 1B 1001 / / 2R 2B 2R 2B 1101 / / / / XX 2B 2R 1B 1R 2B 2R XX Because of the green slots, the chances are about 1/3, that the strategy works out. Issues The ball slot The slot the ball lands on cannot be used. Therefore you can only swap in 3 of a squad into slots of the color. You may be able to put the fourth champ on another color, or you may not, if the ball was already on that color before. On the next ball area you may lose that fourth champion. Or you may never have the chance to swap in the fourth champion. The blocked slot can change your positional formation abilities, especially if it is the DPS slot. What if green needs to be replaced? If green needs to be replaced two or three times (from area 901), this strategy does not work out. You will end up with champions from the "any" team. If green needs to be replaced once, you have a 50% chance that the other two are black and red and a 50% that both are red or black. In the first case, the strategy still works out, in the second you will end up with champions from the "any" team. Before area 901 The rest of your available champions may not make it to area 901. Between 901 and 1101 You have a mixed formation, that may not be strong enough. You know, that formation 1 and formation 2 can beat 1150, but you can't that a mix will make it to 1101. Tanking This strategy may work for DPS, but you may still lose, because you cannot tank an area, if you do not take care of your tanking situation. Ramping Champions that ramp of with the number of areas will not have the opportunity to do so. Make sure you test your formations in free play without ramping buffs. Go to soft cap with another team. Then put in your formation 1 or 2, without beating any areas with them. Check, if the BUD is high enough for area 1150. It has to be 1e418 or higher. Improvements If you have two more formations (3 and 4) that can beat area 1150, you can use the same strategy to try to form the "any" team. Just start the tree from area 701 instead. If the strategy works out (also ~1/3 chance), formation 3 or formation 4 is your "any" team. Ideally, all of your prepared formations can beat 1150, even if you swap their red part with any red part of all the other prepared formations. Therefore I recommend to put your DPS for all prepared information on the same color, e.g. red. For the tanks, this works out automatically, since one tank slot is red and one is black. Prepare different "green" teams, having one tank and strong support. Depending on how many you can create, try to make sure they are used in the later areas. Other strategies Green team strategy Maybe, you have two strong champions, that you want to use in the lasts areas, e.g. your best DPS and your best Tank. You can put them into the green slots, in area X or later and then hope that the ball does never land on green again. It is best to swap in your green team on the next opportunity after area 700 (see Math chapter). Combine both Since the first strategy can win with just 8 champions, it doesn't matter, who is on green. Use the green team strategy additionally, for the case the first strategy doesn't work out. But maybe you do not want to use your best DPS and Tank in this case. Building squads Build squads: Red squads: 4 champions: 1 DPS + 1 Tank + 2 Support Black squads: 4 champions: 1 Tank + 3 Support Green squads: 2 champions: 1 Tank + 1 Support For the start you need one red, one black and one green squad. There are 11 "ball areas". That means you need the 3 starting squads and at least 11 additional squads. Total 14 squads. Ideally you have 33 additional squads, 11 red, 11 black and 11 green. But probably you do not need as much. 6 red, 6 black and 6 green should be fine. Sort them by strength (on their own). Start with the weakest. Try to swap in the next weakest squads in the "ball areas". If you see, that it gets tough, skip the next weakest squad and use a stronger one instead. Near the end, use your strongest squads. The House Always Wins - Math Odd calculation for the Idea Because of green, the odds are not as good as it looks on the first glimpse. In every "ball area", there is a chance of 4/10 for red, 4/10 for black and 2/10 for green. In 901 the chance for getting red or black is 8/10. In 1001 the chance for getting red or black is 8/10. Multiplied with the chance of 901, it is 64/100. In 1101 the chance for not XX and not green is 6/10. Multiplied with 64/100 is 384/1000. So there is roughly a 1/3 chance for this strategy to work out. That means in average, you will have to try this strategy three times. Odd calculation for Green team strategy Our event is, that the ball lands on green. The probability is 20%. We want to wait for the area, after that probability that the event occurs exactly once is the highest. In area 1101 (before the check) there is only one roll left, therefore the chance the event occors exactly once is 20%. Areaneverexactly oncemore than once 110180%20%0%100164%32%4%90151%38%10%80141%41%18%70133%41%26%60126%39%34%50121%37%42%40117%33%50% So it is best to wait for area 700 or 800 and swap in your "green team" the next time the the ball lands on green. You then have a ~41% chance, that you finish the variant with your "green team". The House Always Wins - Example Planning Planning my teams to test the idea. I do not know if it will work. Choose the teams To make it easier, I use the same seats, because seat conficts can hard to be resolved. Team 1: - Krydle (Tank) Minthara (Tank) Desmond - Kas (DPS) Jim - Volo Torogar Rust - Team 2: - Blooshi (Tank) Artemis (Dps) Antrius - Evelyn (Tank) Catti-Brie - Birdsong Virgil Nova (Tank) - Green Team: Miria Valentine Green Team Backup: Duke Ravenguard Briv Build squads Team 1: Squad Red: 3. Minthara (Tank) 7. Jim 6. Kas (DPS) 9. Volo Squad Black: 2. Krydle (Tank) 4. Desmond 10. Torogar 11. Rust Team 2: Squad Red: 3. Artemis (Dps) 7. Catti-Brie 6. Evelyn (Tank) 9. Birdsong Squad Black: 2. Blooshi (Tank) 4. Kent 10. Virgil 11. Nova Build Formations ♡: red ♣: black ♠: green (♣ Vol) (♠ ? ) (♡ Rus) (♡ Tor) (♣ Kas) (♣ Min) (♠ ? ) (♡ Des) (♡ Kry) (♣ Jim) (♣ Bir) (♠ ? ) (♡ Vir) (♡ Nov) (♣ Cat) (♣ Eve) (♠ ? ) (♡ Ken) (♡ Blo) (♣ Art) Test teams I run the free play "The Rod of Seven Parts" with the formations. I cannot rely on stacking abilities, like those of Kas or Blooshi. I do not clear any area with the formations. I go to soft cap with another team. I had to make sure, that for the Kas team all champs were turned into vampires an Voronika gets her crown. And I had to play Nrakks mini game to get 60 Ki points. To beat area 1150 we need a BUD of ~1e418. My Kas team does only BUD 1e320. That's far from enough. There are lot of bad choices for the formation: Kas is a ramping champ. Volo has the wrong position. Too few evil champs. Vecna campaign has fewer gold, not good for Rust, but Rust is still one of my strongest buffers. Better version of Kas formation: (♣ Des) (♠ ? ) (♡ Vor) (♡ Kas) (♣ Jim) (♣ Blo) (♠ ? ) (♡ Rus) (♡ Min) (♣ Tor) 1 Voronika 2 Blooshi 3 Minthara 4 Desmond - 6 Kas 7 Jim - - 10 Torogar 11 Rust Red squad: 1 Voronika 3 Minthara 6 Kas 11 Rust Black squad: 2 Blooshi 4 Desmond 7 Jim 10 Torogar My Artemis team does only BUD 1e335. Also far from enough. Better version (♣ Kru) (♠ ? ) (♡ Dha) (♡ Nov) (♣ Bir) (♣ Kry) (♠ ? ) (♡ Nra) (♡ Eve) (♣ Art) 2 Krydle 3 Artemis 4 Krix 5 Dhadius 6 Evelyn 8 Nrakk 9 Birdsong 11 Nova Black squad: 5 Dhadius 6 Evelyn 8 Nrakk 11 Nova Red squad: 2 Krydle 3 Artemis 4 Krux 9 Birdsong Seats do not fit, so I have to move something around. Kas cannot be moved without loosing to much. Therefore I swap Artemis with Nrakk. Now my Kas team does 1e396. and my Artemis team does 1e384. Still not enough. If I will be able to get Miria on the green tank slot at the end, it is nearly enough for both formations. So I have these squads: Formation 1 Black Squad (1B): 2 Blooshi 4 Desmond 7 Jim 10 Torogar Formation 1 Red Squad (1R): 1 Voronika 3 Minthara 6 Kas 11 Rust Formation 2 Black Squad (2B): 2 Krydle 4 Krux 8 Nrakk 9 Birdsong Formation 2 Red Squad (2R): 3 Artemis 5 Dhadius 6 Evelyn 11 Nova All slots are used but 12: So we have Miria in the Green Team. I need to find the weakest links of each squad, Because these are the champs I may not be able put in because of the ball slot or have to put into another color and risk to lose it. For the Artemis team this is Krydle and then Nova. For the Kas team this is Minthara and then Voronika. I now test 1R with 2B: 1e357 and 2R with 1B: 1e355 With Miria: 1R with 2B: and 2R with 1B: 1e388 That's not enough to get to area 1101, I need 1e401. Conclusion: My account power isn't enough. And the strategy has so many approximations. I also need more room for errors. I absolutely need lots of more power. Later I have worked on my legendary levels and now: Kas Team: without Mira: 1e413 with Miria: 1e446 Artemis Team without Miria: 1e403 with Miria: 1e424 The House Always Wins - Refined strategy idea Take green slots and the slot that is blocked by the ball into account. Disclaimer Everything is subjective I am not an expert I do not care about optimization I do not want to spend too much time into this game Everything depends on too many different factors Every account is different The game changes, it is hard to stay up to date It is fun to fiddle around and see what happens

A guide to help you get the most gems as fast as possible. Introduction GUIDE IS OUT OF DATE Welcome to my first published Steam guide. In this guide I will attempt to show you the best way to farm gems. I will be making a few assumptions. 1. You have a general knowledge of the game. 2. You have the Modron Core unlocked. 3. You have the Champions named unlocked. If you don't have them unlocked you can just disregard their mention. No Speed champions mentioned have alternatives. Special Thanks Chugsworth Formations Guide Kiransalee (Discord: Kiransalee#8357) Why Farm Gems Gems are the main resource of the game. With gems you can buy Chests which have gear for your Champions and other useful items. You can purchase Familiars with gems which allow you to automate more of the game. The more familiars you have unlocked, the better your gem farm will be, You can also purchase a second Modron Core in order to have three parties, two of which will be automated. Set Up The best variant to run for gem farming is The Mad Wizard in A Grand Tour of the Sword Coast. This is the variant we will be using. The first step will be figuring out your Click Damage wall. In order to find this you want to put one Familiar on the field and one familiar upgrading your click damage. Let this run until your click damage stops instantly killing the mobs. Make a note of the last boss level where your click damage was still instantly killing, this will be your reset level. At this stage you are also going to want to save your formation with your champions and familiars in it. Speed Champions These are the most important champions for gem farming. In this section I am listing the Specialization choice for speed and the Feats that boost speed. The effectiveness and priority order will be different for each player based on champion unlocks, Feat unlocks, and item levels. Deekin, Slot 1: Mechanic: Increased Enemy Spawn Speed Specialization: Boss Wants Speed Feat: Overconfidence (Gold Chests) Item: n/a Sentry, Slot 4: Mechanic: Decreased Quest Requirements Specialization: Echo's Will Feat: n/a Item: Slot 3, max effectiveness at 600% Shandie, Slot 6: Mechanic: Increased Game Speed Specialization: Ranger Training Feat: n/a Item: n/a Hew Maan, Slot 8: Mechanic: Increased Quest Progress Specialization: Impressive Coatwork Feat: Walking Lessons (Gems) Item: Slot 4, unknown max Havilar, Slot 10: Mechanic: Increased Quest Progress Specialization: n/a Feat: n/a Item: n/a Melf, Slot 12: Mechanic: Increased Enemy Spawn Speed, Increased Quest Progress, Increased Enemies Spawned Per Wave Specialization: Extra Supplements Feat: Rushed Plans (Gold Chests) Item: Slot 4, no max Briv (Slot 5), Xander (Slot 5), and Minsc (Slot 7) are all considered speed champions. They are not useful for the 100% automated gem farm in my opinion. I have listed why under the "Extra Information" section. My personal order of priority is the following. Remember that this can change based on your own unlocks and item levels. Hew Maan Shandie Deekin Melf Sentry Havilar Extra Champions The Champions in this section do not have Speed boosting abilities but help to get through the armored stage faster. The armored stage in each run is 14, 64, 114, etc. The Champions are listed in order of effectiveness. I have not included any Champions that share a slot with a Speed mechanic. Only the best Champion in each slot has been mentioned, with one exception. Hitch, Slot 8: Specialization: More Daggers Feat: Excess Dagger Storage (Strahd) Effectiveness: Removes 2.77 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: n/a Binwin, Slot 3: Effectiveness: Removes 1.90 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: n/a Farideh, Slot 7: Effectiveness: Removes 1.17 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: Slot conflicts with Black Viper. Farideh is better for Speed. See Black Viper for more information. Qillek, Slot 5: Effectiveness: Removes 1.00 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: n/a Birdsong, Slot 9: Effectiveness: Removes 1.00 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: n/a Black Viper, Slot 7: Specialization: Collector Effectiveness: Removes 0.76 armored segment(s) per second. Extra Info: When Black Viper is in your party there is a chance for the gem bags from bosses to drop a special Red Gem. Black Viper collects these to increase her effectiveness. Currently there is not a benefit to collecting past her last upgrade at 6500 Red Gems. I keep collecting them for fun as she seemingly collects them forever. As mentioned above, Farideh is the optimal choice by a slight margin. Method The minimum requirements for the automated gem farm is 2 familiars, 100% optimized farm is 15 familiars. Each additional familiar beyond 2 just speeds up your farm. It is perfectly acceptable to work your way up over time. 5 familiars on the field is the optimized number to have. This is because with 5 familiars on the field will automatically open the gem bag that the boss drops. This avoids the wait time required for the gem bag to open by itself. 6 familiars on the field will automatically click the distractions that run/fly by in the background. The distractions can rarely spawn an additional monster which must be killed before you can progress. This slows down your progress. While it doesn't slow you by a significant amount, this time adds up over time. Start a Mad Wizard free play. Put one familiar on the field and one on your click damage. The next step is putting familiars on each of the champions you will be using. I would prioritize champions like this. 1. Hew Maan 2. Shandie 3. Deekin 4. Melf 5. Sentry 6. Havilar 7. Binwin 8. Black Viper You will click your Modron Core and select Setup Automation. Select your saved Gem Farm formation. Pick your champions specializations. Also enable "Set Area Goal" and have it reset at whatever level you figured out during Set Up. Havilar must have her imp follower summoned in order to get the speed buff. The proper imp is the first one that gets summoned when using her ultimate, Dembo (bright red). If you keep a familiar on Havilar's ult she will continue to sacrifice her imps and summon the next one, this is bad. Use the ult once so that Havilar has the proper imp out when you save your formation. Above your click damage you have the option to change how you level up your champions. If you have this set to "x100" Havilar will keep the proper imp out through all of your resets. You don't need a familiar on her ult, and this will allow her to provide her speed buff as much as possible. If you set the level option to "Upg" (upgrade) Havilar will NOT keep the proper imp. You need to run with x100 at all times. Formations & Specializations Minimalist Formation: (8 Familiars) Melf - Extra Supplements (empty slot) Hew Maan - Impressive Coatwork Sentry - Echo's Will Shandie - Ranger Training Havilar - Mastery of Battle (empty slot) Deekin - Boss Wants Speed (empty slot) My Formation: (15 Familiars) Black Viper - Collector Shandie - Ranger Training Hew Maan - Impressive Coatwork Sentry - Echo's Will Birdsong - Soloist / Theme of Consideration Havilar - Mastery of Battle Melf - Extra Supplements Deekin - Boss Wants Speed Binwin - More Minions Kiransalee's Formation: (16 Familiars) OUT OF DATE Shandie - Ranger Training Birdsong - Theme of Consideration/Soloist Melf - Extra Supplements Sentry - Echo's Will Spurt - Kobold Family Briv - Metalborn Deekin - Boss Wants Speed Havilar - Mastery of Battle Korth - Rapid Training Patron Mirt Mirt Formation: (X Familiars) Melf - Extra Supplements Shandie - Ranger Training Hew Maan - Impressive Coatwork Sentry - Echo's Will (empty slot) Havilar - Mastery of Battle (empty slot) Binwin - More Minions Extra Information Briv, Xander and Minsc are considered Speed champions but are absolutely useless for the automated gem farm. Minsc Assessment: (credit to Kiransalee) Idle Champions spawns enemies in ‘waves’. Each wave on a non-boss zones consists of 1-3 enemies, which spawn in rapid succession from one another (three enemy waves are rare). The next wave of enemies spawns when 1 of 2 conditions are met: A short delay from when all enemies from the previous wave are killed. 5 seconds have passed." From this we have some observations why Minsc is bad as a speed Champion.Facts: Minsc has a 10% chance of summoning one extra enemy on a wave, and a 2% chance of summoning 2 extra enemies. Waves are 1-3 mobs. Usually the mobs of a wave arrive sequentially, not simultaneously (not in the quote above but mentioned in the longer reddit article). Clearing a wave causes the next wave to spawn after a quick delay. Not all procs of Minsc's ability will happen in stages where the proc is useful.Deductions: When we add an additional mob spawn in a wave, we increase the amount of time it'll take to spawn the next wave. Each mob enters the screen sequentially as part of a wave. The next wave won't start to spawn until the prior wave is destroyed or 5 seconds has passed. So by summoning an additional mob we increase the time of the wave. I believe the summoning works as a time saver but it does extend another time saving mechanism at the same time (extending the spawn time of the next wave). Summons 2 additional mobs compounds this delay.Consider interactions with other champions: Deekin (/Melf 33% of the time) causes enemies to become targetable faster once they are on the screen but they don't make the wave sequence happen faster. By reducing "Kill X Monsters" or "Collect Y Things" area requirements, Sentry reduces the viability of increased summoning. Also, the more monsters that spawn in a native wave (1-3) the less likely an additional monster spawns is going to be an efficient speed up mechanism. Havilar's first Imp ULT (+Melf 33% of the time) also significantly decreases wave duration of fiend waves (When Melf has his version it applies broadly), giving Minsc less opportunities to be useful. 2 of Melf's 3 speed mechanisms have a complicated relationship with Minsc. My Melf has a 380% increase to his speed mechanic. So when he summons additional enemies he summons an additional 3-4 enemies. This ends stages fairly quickly. When Melf multiplies an individual kill's collection value a kill counts as 4 or 5 kills for collection purposes. Melf and Sentry together greatly diminish Minsc's opportunities. If I need 17 X or Y to complete a stage, then a Melf who summons more enemies summons 4-7 enemies, which means I need 3 to 5 waves to clear an area. If I need 17 X or Y to complete a stage, then a Melf who collect more per kill only needs 4 or 5 collections to complete an area, which is 2 to 5 waves. Minsc only has 2 to 5 opportunities to be useful here, if he happens to proc his ability at a useful time. Melf, Havilar, and Sentry combined mechanisms make it possible to complete an area with Fiends in one wave. Nothing Minsc will do here helps.

Welcome to the guide for those new players either just starting or below, I would say 1,500 hours in the game. Possibly even more, it depends how quick you are. After reading this guide my Onion Guide may be a good read to follow as I will use similar language as in that guide, namely “layers”. This guide was written due to the common misconceptions new players have about the game, and yes this isn’t a defence of the game being the “perfect game”, as there is no “perfect games” people. None. Ever. Even Pac-man had its problems! However, this is to devoid the common misconceptions about free-to-play games and all that entails. So let’s get into the things you shouldn’t worry about as a New Player in Idle Champions. Quick OldGamer’s Jargon Check In every game I play, I personally use a technique whereby I “peel” away each “layer” of the game’s Onion (no not Orion). This gives me a way to look at each game I play in detail and be able to play it to the way I will have fun. In fact, over the decades, it has become THE fun sometimes just following the “Onion Method” rather than actually playing some games. (DarkSouls I am looking at you) Thus, this is what I am talking about when I say these words. A “Layer” being a feature, mechanic or step in the process of getting a game and “peeling” back a layer means I have successfully accomplished “getting” it. (Totally different to being good at the game by the way) This whole concept being called the “Onion Method”. Incidentally, the song “Orion” in the 80s came out on an LP and I misread it as “Onion” so I have that tune in my head every-time I use the Onion Method. But, that’s off topic, let’s get into it. 1.Speed of Progress Don’t worry about it. The speed of progress, especially in the tutorial sections of the game is mindbogglingly slow but it does and will pick up. The main takeaway here is just go through the motions, write down what you are learning (or just remember) and do what Bruenor tells you. He’s a great dwarf after all. Also, don't fall into the "Are Ya Chicken" trap or ANY variants. The advice is just to do the main mission adventures you see first until you HAVE to do some variants in order to progress. 2.Speed of the Game Typically when you are out in the “big bad world” and onto your own adventure within the Sword Coast. This game does rather spit you out of “Dwarven Road College” (that’s the tutorial) and go “you got it now, tally ho!” – Then you are just like, doing your thing and you have no clue what to do and you find yourself in a Ballroom Blitz. Wait. That’s different. After you get some speed champions you will be rocketing through. 3.Insatiable Clicking The manually clicking will eventually stop. Trust me. You just need to get to familiars and that is unlocked when you hit level 66 in any adventure. (Not sure why there is a benchmark) Plus, you should now be getting your first familiar (Mage Hand) after your first completed adventure as it’s only 250 gems I think nowadays. After that you have 3 low gem familiars which you can go for if you just can’t wait to stop clicking. Although only one can suffice. 4.Speed of getting Items and Gems This eventually will get better and better, in such, you will be swimming in all items soon enough. For first, however, I would get into combinations with my list of combinations which will start you off pretty good. Other than that, you get gems by completing regular adventures (don’t do the variants) and items will come when you start buying gold chests every 500 gems. Yes it is a grind, yet this is an incremental game. So the main takeaway is to keep on the mission adventures to get gems and your favour, enabling you to buy gold chests, the first set (3) of familiars and blessings. “Gem Hunter” being a good first goal to have in Blessings. You don’t have to farm gems either yet. The missions will get you enough gems in the early game. More details in my Onion Guide. 5.Learning EVERYTHING in one day Don’t do it. I know some gamers love to get in there and do everything simultaneously but this game requires the gentle calm approach and a cool side of onions. (See my onion guide – starting to become a commercial for this guide) "Rome wasn't built in a day", neither is your progress in Idle Champions and you are not a "Very Model Major-General" either and know all Information Vegetable, Animal, & Mineral...unless you're a botanist or David I guess. 6.Not getting above yourself Kind of related to the above, but just another nod to not get frazzled by all the distractions and buttons in the game. You could do a whole guide just on the UI of this game, especially how they like to add new icons every 15 minutes to this game (slight exaggeration). I won’t though. 7.Don’t Worry About Gear Seriously, when you first start off. Don’t worry about it. In the sense, yes still obtain the gear by opening chests, using codes etc…but you don’t need that “golden epic” or that particular champion to become fully geared right now. It comes in time. Also, gear only becomes really apparent after you have got to the point that favour is slow to grind for, blessings are all had and Patron perks are done. Yes, I would advise to epic out all your core/evergreen champions but it isn’t anything to worry about. Just keep grinding gems to get gold chests and using those codes. 8.Getting the “Best” (Meta) Champions This will come in time and sort of ties into the next “Things to not worry about” but yes, you will get a lot of recommendations or you may have an idea of who you want in your roster. However, at the moment just get the feel for the champions you already have and make sure to sign up to the newsletter as Hitch is a great “cloak and dagger” (the puns are back!) DPS. 9.Time to get those Pieces Time pieces is another common desire for new players, due to the above but also for some advice you may be getting from other players of the game. Just to note that Time Pieces (“Pieces”) will become more readily available. Although, still not enough in my opinion, but as I said at the top this game isn’t perfect. So for now, every 3 weeks will be your TimeGate opening in the Natural timegates. Use those to unlock new champions whilst when you get to 6 pieces often the go to choice is Deekin for speed. Although, other champions do top the list such as Shandie, Briv, Avren, Krull, Zorbu etc.. The point is, not to get too worried about getting the best of the best just yet. The early missions are easier than most and new champions are really only needed to deal with variants essentially even when tackling high level completions on normal. Yet, easier with a variety and of course those affiliation bonds/abilities you get in certain champions. 10.You Don’t Have to Click Buy You don’t. Seriously. You could play this purely for free if that is what you want to do. (Although, I bet you are perfectly happy to pay an overpriced entry fee for a game that doesn’t say F2P in it? :)) Think of all the “micro-transactions” as a tip after some play . But you don't even have to if you don't want to. AS OF SEPTEMBER 16TH - THE INTRODUCTION OF SEASON PASSES, THIS GAME IS NOW EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE IN IT'S MONEY SPINNING - SO BUYER/PLAYER BE AWARE It is this way as it is free at the “point of delivery” in meaning everything that is and can be seen in game is free to be had (plus more). It only costs time to do it. (Bit like how the NHS is “free” and we pay for it in our taxes, as so typical for the British to do. They would tax Tea if they could…wait…too soon?) After a while you may want to buy DLC, or wild offers but this is up to you. I say this, as a person who does play free to play games and has been a gamer since the 60's, this game does their “shop” correctly. There are no pay walls. You don’t “need” to pay for an expansion in order to have a specific mechanic (unlike Paradox Games). You don’t “need” to pay for their DLCs in order to get specific gameplay features (unlike EA). You don’t “need” to pay for ongoing developing and support for the game (Unlike Warcraft). You don’t. But if you like to, you can. And that can start from as little as 5 bucks. Advise on which Champions to unlock during time gates. Introduction This guide was made to help players make their Timegate choices and is generalised based on community feedback and my personal experience. Terminology Swaps refers to all champions in the same slot. Swap in A champion that is temporarilly swapped with another champion (usually the 10th) to gain a quick advantage. i.e. Cattie-Brie and her marked for death ability. 10th Champion Champion in formation that is dropped during "A Grand Tour of the Sword Coast" adventures. For the Core Champions this is ussually Minsc or Jarlaxe Core Champions all Champions that are already unlocked or unlocked through an adventure outside of events/Time gates. Split Priorities A champion may be split into two priorities due to A difference in priority for unlock and Equipment due to only being trully viable if properly equiped during their respective event Only possesing one usefull ability that is unaffected by equipment and having no further use outside that. Having potential but not accepted by the currrent Meta Due to this there are several markers to indicate this usage Unlock - For unlocking the champion Equipment - Event Equipment - Attempting to improve the champions equipment through chests, but only when the champion obtained decent gear during their event. Non-[Champion Name] users - People that don't have, use and or like a particular champion and their abilities. Also show that their is low compatability between the two champions. [Champion Name] users - People that activly use this Champion in every formation in which they are effective. Also shows that their is high compatability between the two champions. Champion Roster Below are two tables showing whic champions belong to which slots. Names that are in bold and underlined are non-event champions and cannot be obtained through Time Gates Slot 1 Slot 2 Slot 3 Slot 4 Slot 5 Slot 6 Bruenor Celeste Nayeli Jarlaxe Calliope Asharra Deekin Regis Gronma Stoki Dhadius Krond Donaar Binwin Ishi Diath Evelyn Slot 7 Slot 8 Slot 9 Slot 10 Slot 11 Slot 12 Minsc Delina Makos Tyril Jamilah Arkhan Catti-brie Hitch Drizzt Barrowin Strix Zorbu Farideh Nrakk Birdsong Wulfgar Warden Azaka Vlahnya High Priority Champions that outshine their swaps or posses usefull abilities that can be used with minimal loss in comparisson to their swaps most of these Champions will match or surpass their counterparts in 1-3 timegates. Birdsong - Non-Farideh users - Buffer and 3rd best Damage dealer in game As a high damage dealer possesing a multi hit attack her use should be obvious. She also increases deekins troubadour trope buff by just being in the formation. Inferior to Makos in a Faireh Formation Strix - Excellent Damage dealer Highest damage Potential in game (With Barrowin otherwise outclassed by Farideh) Can out preform Jamilah with a few pieces of gear Powerfull AoE regular attack Decent debuff against enemies that are approaching your formation Farideh - Non-Barrowin users - Best Damage dealer Has Higher Damage potential than Strix (without Barrowin) Powerful Multi-hit regular attack Deals massive damage against enemies attacking your formation Her Pact Family abilty increases her damage greatly for each Tiefling in your formation Wardem - Debuffer/Swap in/Dps Stackable debuff Posses a decent dps bonus Evelyn - Great Buffer an decent tank Evelyn buffs affect everyone in all colums behind her. Posses a semi-large health pool. Gromma - Tank/Buffer/Debuffer Her circle of the mountain makes her a great tank comparable to Nayeli Furthermore her spiked shell ability allows her to stack debuffs on enemies She has a wide range youth based buff She has a buff that increases Neutral champions for each enemie atticking Gromma She also increases deekins troubadour trope buff by just being in the formation. Her Circle of the artic acts as a permanent debuff on all enemies making her also a capable swap in. Vlahnya- Buffer and accelerator. Vlahnya buffs better than Hitch with relativly low equipment. Her Ultimate Removes 10 non-boss enemies from the level (the amount spanned by regular bosses) She also increases deekins troubadour trope buff by just being in the formation. Deekin - Buffer and accelerator. As long as enemies are getting defeated fast enough Deekin Accelerates early runs making him great for gem farming. Deekin can easilly surpass Bruenor as a buffer. Deekin posses one off the best Ultimates in game dealing Damage to all enemies whilst maximizing his buff for the next 30 seconds immediately afterwards His Troubadour Trope uses some of the best champions in game (Himself, Birdsong,Vlahnya and Calliope) Ishi - Grinder (and Medium Priority DPS) Note: Ishi is best used as a Grinder to increase gold find/favor gain Grinder Gold find increased by at least 10% (no equipment) for every non-human champion she is adjacent top. Wait for it ability greatly increases gold find at wall DPS High attack speed always 0.25 seconds faster than the base speed of the fastest Champion. When used as a DPS she is best used as a Dual DPS with Birdsong Ultimate best used with Birdsongs Ultimate due to thre ultimates secondary affect (Halving birdsongs attack speed) also affects Ishi. Azaka Farming ChampionsAzaka users only Below is a list of champions that are considerd high priority for use in an Azaka favor farming formation and are usually of medium or lower priority and for this reason only information regarding this formation will be shown, also only champions that aren't naturally high priority are listed here. [/list] Wulfgar Wulfgar is used in conjuntion with Regis to increase gold find by stunning enemies Regis - Event equipment - Non-Farideh users - Buffer. Regis is used in conjuntion with Wulfgar to increase gold find per stunned enemy. Nrakk Used to increase stunned enemy count. Catti-Brie Used to increase stunned enemy count. Medium priority Champions here are swaps that ussually need equal or better equipment to outpreform their other swaps, or posses a usefull ability that makes them either the 10th champion in formation or a swap in. Swap Ins/ 10th Champions Stoki - Buffer, Debuffer and Grinder Her golden palms Increases gold near the wall minimizing the loss of Jarlaxe's gold buff whilst still possesing buffer skills Her Ki Strikes ability increases damage for enemies hit by Stoki for 5 seconds Catti-Brie - Debuffer Catti-Brie is a debuffer and is in possesion of a strong ultimate that can help get past the wall As marked for death remains even if she is taken out of the formation this allows for her to be quickly switched in and out of formations without loss. Zorbu - Second Minsc. He is primarily used as a damage booster against one of the following enemy types: Drow Fiend Abberation Giant Elemental AlternatesViable to be used as an alternate for their other swaps or other formation Champions Regis - Event equipment - Non-Farideh users - Buffer. Regis can slightly outpreform Celeste with the equal or better equipment that is unlikely to be gotten from only timegate chests Ruby weakness doesn't affect Farideh's Hellish rebuke as it is considerd to have no typing thus making Celeste the better choice for a Farideh Formation. Barrowin - Buffer Her Blessed hammer buff can be used for large damage increases per hammer The barrowin swap is a technique used to maximize the blessed hammer buff for usage see the how to Barrowin farm for fun and profit by Psylia in the other guides section Dhadius - Event equipment - Buffer Dhadius has more mobility than Calliope but only for champions with an intelligence of 14 or higher Krond - Event equipment - DPS Krond's Survival of the Fittest increases dps multiplicativly for every champion with either A strength score of 18 or greater Any evil alignment Donaar - Event equipment - Krond users - Buffer and Grinder Outfit Code Donaar buffs at a similar rate and wider ranger (His column and those behind him) when compared to Celeste. But as the primary dps is the only one that needs to be buffed and Celest usually having better gear he is the weaker buffer of the two. Low Synergy with the following champions Strix, Farideh, Nayeli, Evelyn (all of which can be considerd high priority) as his Flee command causes enemies to move backwards, whilst these champions have abilities that require enemies to be close to or attacking the formation. Best used with Krond for his Survival of the Fittest buff (which should make up the difference between his and Celeste buffing strength on Krond) Loss of Celeste's healing Ultimate His drop command can be used to increase gold gain Low Priority Champions here are either Low priority Swap ins or need better equipment than their swaps to outpreform them which is unlikely to happen. Low priority swap ins Binwin - Destroying armored obstacles Binwin's best use in a formation is using him to destroy obstacles As binwin takes Nayeli's slot it is advised you have either Stoki And/or Barrowin in the same formation to make up for the loss off a buffer If Binwin is used as a DPS he is best used in conjunction with Barrowin due to their high synergiesAlternates Diath - lesser accelerator Diat can double the value of drops and kills for clearing early to mid levels but only on opponents he hits or kills, but with familiars causing near instant kills at early levels and champions one shotting at mid levels unless you have great treasure hunter gear there will be minimal acceleration. As Diat currently needs the full Waffle Crew(Strix, Evelyn And Paulitin (not yet in game)) for his full power he is currently stuck at low priority. Regis - Unlock As Regis can only outpreform Celeste with equal equipment thus, he is only truly viable as a champion if he was obtained through his event. Dhadius - Unlock As Dhadius can only outpreform Caliope with similar or better equipment, he is only truly viable as a champion if he was obtained through his event. Farideh - Barrowin users - Despite everything said in her high priority slot she just doesn't have the synergy with barrowin to be viable in a Barrowin Formation making her best used in variants where Barrowin can't be used. Multi-hit regular attack Ultimate pushes back enemies Specialized No champion is truly useless but these listed will be useless for non-late game vets that use them in specialized formations. Outside of these specialized formations they can be used for Champion restricting levels and gaining their respective achievements for small but permanent damage boost Nrakk Wulfgar Other Guides For more detailed information on many individual event champions and formations for their respective Timegate/Event see the guides below by _Nameless_King_ https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1523839268 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1319319295 For how to use the Barrowin swap see the guide below by Psylia https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1336175718 For the Azaka favor farming guide by Psylia see the guide below https://www.reddit.com/r/idlechampions/comments/9kbro6/azaka_favor_farm_guide/
