So you've turned on the game, played the first official 'tutorials' at the start. You're dumped out into space next to the base of some folk called "Argons" (they're basically space humans, not that it matters). And the fighting is a pain, there's never enough money, the missions are repetitive, the dialog is stunted, the help menu seems to alternate between 'just figure it out' and stuff that's as easy to navigate as a municipal code... so how in the world does this game have positive ratings? What are you supposed to do? When does this get 'fun'? Cool, we're on the same page, read on to get past all that. Introduction So you've turned on the game, played the first official 'tutorials' at the start. You're dumped out into space next to the base of some folk called "Argons" (they're basically space humans, not that it matters). You're told you should now take missions, mine, trade, and maybe scan bases for extra cash... now what? First off I'm not an 'expert' on this game. I'm a relatively new player who hit this wall of 'now what' and slowly, painfully, grinded his way to get to the point where the game started being fun. I did it by asking a ton of questions in the discussion areas (there are some great players in that community), watching youtube videos, googling stuff.. I did it because of the great reviews this game has, because I could see the seeds of a good game in an otherwise painful experience, and probably some sunk-cost fallacy. And I want to help you get to 'the fun part' as quickly as possible, because there IS some cool stuff in here. Let's start, and apologies for my tone not being enthusiastic and bubbly. But you clicked on something that said "Cynic's Guide" so... Before you begin Before you actually start. Get back in that tutorial mission with the combat. You will find the combat utterly sucks and makes no sense. That's because the starting controls make zero sense.. so change them. There are a bunch of suggestions out there for better keybinds, or make your own, keep trying different things, keep replaying that mission, until you find a control schema that feels natural to you. Because you'll be using it for a looooong time so get this fixed before you get much further. For me, personally, the most important changes / settings are: Movement: * W 'down', 'S' up, 'A' left, 'D' right * 'Q' rotate left, 'E' rotate right * Shift+'W' accelerate * Shift+'S' decelerate * 'X' match speed, Shift+'X' stop * [Tab] thrust / afterburners (hint, you can afterburner to high speed and then switch to travel mode to quickly get up to speed / away from stuff) Modes: Shift+.. ..1: travel ..2: scan ..3: long-range scan Guns layouts: 1,2,3,4 The rest is all pretty-much to-taste or accessible through menus ([return/enter], that's the keys I find myself reaching for most of the time Ok, NOW start the game (foundations) There is a story / guide! You're in a ship. You are told to do missions. Meh. All you can do are 'easy' and 'very easy' missions and you'll have an easier / more fun time doing those once you get your free super-zoomie ship, so skip that. You'll be told to find folk that let you 'join the war against the Holy Order..'. Don't. This isn't an RPG (it just looks like it) and the Holy Order aren't 'bad guys'. They're just a faction that has some ships you'll want later on. For which you'll need a positive reputation with them, that's harder to grind if you join a fight against them. Also there's no plot there (it just tricks you into thinking there's a plot there, its a trap). (The 'Xenos' are the bad guys - oh, sorry, 'Xenon' - feel free to join the war against them, but don't do the missions till you have the zoomie ship or you'll hate your life) It is hinted that you should mine. Your ship isn't good for that, mining is insanely boring. It is hinted that you should trade. Your ship isn't good for that, you don't have enough of the map visible to do that. There's a brief snipped that you can scan stations for cash. This is a boring process where you move at insanely low speeds along bases in scan mode, trying to spot the blinking things that are 'sparks' instead of the million blinking things that are just blinking lights. .......... Surprisingly, this is exactly what you want to do right away. WAIT! Before you close this guide for suggesting this insanely.. slow.. tedious.. painful.. activity...... This is how you unlock the ACTUAL story-missions / tutorial / first-base!! Yea, I wouldn't have guessed it either, until way-too-many hours in the game. Because normal game-design that we've learned over decades of playing games is that the main mission / tutorial stuffs are supposed to hook you early and be virtually unavoidable, not hidden easter-eggs. But here were are. Don't worry about it, you're not really playing an RPG, so don't hold it to the standards of an RPG, we'll get past that. So you HAVE to start by slow-scanning bases (don't know if its random or always on the base you started from) to actually get started. Scan mode activated, move.. slowly.. over.. the.. station... Spot the tiny crackling thing.. Hopefully you'll quickly hit one where a Boron (like a.. fish-elephant-thing...) tells you they have a job for you. Something about landing back on the base, getting out of your ship, and following the yellow line to pick up a briefcase. Ok, you're now in the story (which is actually a series of kind of fun missions. Doing 'the story' So you're doing the 'story' / initial tutorial. You'll hit two walls: resources and 'what in the world am I supposed to do next'? Let's start with the second part, but at each point you hit a wall of 'I can't afford X' or 'my ship isn't good enough to do Y' then skip down and do the rest of the guide until you get past it, then come back here. So, 'what in the world am I supposed to do next'? The 'tutorial' / 'main mission' is painfully short on details in places. Criminally so given that missions have this giant empty ''briefing" space where someone (a game dev with 5 minutes free after lunch) could easily type 'do this now, and you do it by clicking this and this'. Not exactly voice-over costs, just some basic effort. Anyway. Some people will suggest you're supposed to dig through the 'help' and encyclopedia and what not. .. For those of us who don't enjoy cramming for exams, digging through obscure lessons in order to have fun? Its the 21st century, so Youtube this stuff. Here's the video you want:

Yes, spoilers. Don't worry about it, this isn't exactly high-drama nail-biting murder-mystery. Just play through until you get stuck. Then watch a bit further forward in the video till you get to and through where you were stuck. Hit pause, go back to playing. Repeat till you have a base and are done with the 'fun' missions. When it comes to building out your first base don't forget to hire / transfer / assign a manager, and buy / assign a Transport ship or two to 'trade' for that manager / base. Otherwise getting it built out will take... for... ever... (or you have to manually fly all those resources over. Which, great if you wanna play space-trucker, nothing wrong with that. Otherwise though.. hire one) Hiring a manager Starting funds So you need money. First you need some quick starting capital. Technically missions could give you that. Maybe they're supposed to? Your ship is crap, you can't fight for crap-all until you get some other units watching your back, the 'easy' missions take a while to complete and quickly get repetitive. Instead go out into those mineral fields. Look for blinking stuff on the asteroids. Go to them, shoot the crystals, sell them at the 'Trader' inside the base (you have to get out of your ship), rinse and repeat until you have a few hundred-thousand $ worth of crystals. Here you go, this is what you do. Getting crystals (There's supposedly a mod for this too, though I haven't tried it) Modded cheaty version Is this 'fun'? No. Is it more fun and less time-intensive then those other ways of making that initial starting-funds? For me it was, but you do you. I hear crystals got nerfed (trying to drive people to the missions? No idea) but for me it was good enough to get going anyway. Just get to enough money to get to the next part of the guide (and maybe repeat this from time to time) Making the money You're in the cockpit of what seems like a fighter, there are factions to join, missions to be had, space to explore, all the tutorials focused on the 1st-player experience... I see why you might be tempted to think this is an RPG. It is not. This is a 4x strategy game that you happen to play in first-player a lot of the time. Why does this matter? In an RGP you fly around doing cool stuff to earn money and unlocks and such. In a 4x game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) what do you start by doing? That's right, you find your natural starting resources (eXplore), grab some quick SCVs, drones, peasants, peons, whatever and you throw them at your natural resources. (eXploit) Then you use the money to quickly build out more of that until you have a decent economy, at which point you start cranking out your initial zerg or whatever to protect them and move into the 'meat' of the game. (eXpand, eXterminate) That's kind of what you have to do here. 1) Your 'drones' are your mining vessels. You buy them (size small or medium) at 'wharfs' using 'buy ship', set them to 'local automine in your naturals. Where are your 'naturals'? You want sectors that have blue bases (blue just means friendly) with mineral sectors (asteroids for normal mining, gas for gas mining) AND bases that buy what you're mining. You can see what's bought and sold by using the filter (top right) and look at 'buy' to make sure it includes the stuff you're planning to harvest. Drop resource beacons in mineral / gas fields so your units can have an idea of what minerals are where in that sector. Mining 2) Your next 'SCVs' are your trading vessels. They're a bit more complicated to use. So captains / pilots have a 'star' rating. As far as what you care about, it means 'what can these do'. At 1 star (you can get them to 1 star through power-ups you buy at just about any station, if they're not there already) they can do local auto-trade (probably useless to you) or 'repeat command'. On repeat command you can right-click to 'buy' a resource from a base and 'sell' it to another.. and then if you expand out the 'buy' and 'sell' section in 'behavior' you can add a bunch of Other locations to buy and sell from, and control the prices you're buying and selling at. So what you Don't need to do is worry about the exact price at every station. Just add all of the ones you see that 'buy' the resource you wanna sell and that 'sell' what you wanna buy. Don't worry about prices, your 'min' and 'max' costs will make sure you're always selling at a higher price then you bought stuff. That may sound weird to those who play normal trading games, where you look for the lowest cost sale, and then sell at the highest price. You can't do that in this game because the prices change too frequently for you to manually try and deal with that. Remember, 4x game, not RPG. So, for example, here are the 'average' prices people keep mentioning in comments: Wares costs[egosoft.com] Just set your 'buy at' cost under the average, your 'sell at' cost over it, and you'll always make some kind of profit. Also you'll wanna drop satellites near the bases you're buying / selling at so your units know what the costs are without having to drive over there to find out. So, for example, lets say you wanna trade in Antimatter Cells. * You find that locations A,B,C sell Antimatter (doesn't matter for how much, it will change quickly and constantly). * Grab your trader, 'repeat orders', right click location A and say 'buy from' [A], anti-matter, $500. (Or however much - the average in that chart is 540, so you wanna just be lower then that. Go too low and you'll frequently have bases not selling for that price point, get too close to the average and you won't make any profit). * Go into the trader's behavior. You'll see 'buy' is in there which, if you expand, says they're buying from locationA. And give you an option to 'Add'. So move your map to location B, 'Add' in behavior, right click location B, and 'select'. It should now be added to the list of places you're buying from. Repeat for location C. * Then you see that locations X,Y,Z are buying antimatter. Right click it and 'Sell to'. Then do the same stuff as you did for 'buy' but you're selling to X,Y,Z and for some price above average, like $600. You can do sequential orders.. see the linked video on repeat orders for more advanced stuff. If you frequently look at your map and see your traders sitting around twiddling their thumbs you may need to tweak their buy and sell prices, and/or adding more bases for them to look at. Once you hit 2-stars (there should be some power-ups for that too, or just wait) you can have the transports just 'fulfill shortages' or such for a mineral. Then you don't have to micromanage bases, but they may fly to dangerous places so be careful. There's a ton of videos out there on mining and trading 'cause it is a big part of the game. Here's some but you'll likely look at a lot more. Local AutotradingRepeat OrdersFill Shortages Natural expansions So your blue-base areas were friendly, but you can't dock / sell at the orange ones. That's because they don't like you (your rep is under 8 or so). This is easy enough to solve. Fly over (weapons off) to their bases. Don't engage their defenders if they send them out, just fly elsewhere if they're hurting you - the drones probably won't. Each station (in most cases) will soon spawn a 'criminal'. Select them (nearest enemy) Make sure it says they are a 'criminal' (red letters in the description) Shoot them (make sure NOT to hit the station - wait for a clear shot!!) Fly to the next station. Repeat until your reputation is under 8 and you can dock. Now your SCVs/peons can mine, sell, and trade in those areas, which will steadily keep increasing your rep with that faction. You can also do missions for them now to more quickly increase your rep until you can buy some of their 'really cool stuff' Improving reputations Base building: Blueprints We're almost there now, to the 4x strategy part of the game. So you have a starting base (from that 'secret' mission). You have a starter economy where you're pulling in money. You have a few decent starting ships (the zoomie one for doing most of stuff, the frigate for some of the shootiness, probably some zerg units - light fighters - guarding some of your traders or miners or whatever). You want to build a base. There are a ton of guides on youtube of your starting base, how to make wafers and green energy and self-sufficient productions. You excitedly jump in to make them happen aaaaaaaand the only thing you can do is throw on some solar panels on your base because everything else is locked. Fantastic. You can buy blueprints from faction representatives. And most of them are stupidly expensive. You can get Some starter ones at a reasonable cost (totally ok to go that route) so you can save up and dive into wafer productions, then wait until you get enough money to do the 'fun stuff'. ... yea, I thought the same thing. Ok, here's the trick you're supposed to know: you're supposed to use Bombs. Step 1) Make sure you do the Research (from that secret mission) to let you hack blueprints Step 2) Make and use bombs: Go to trading station and unlock spacesuit bombs. Go to pirate stations to get components for EMP bombs - loadstone (you can also get it from following miners around), remote detonators (mostly from black market and pirate stations), and secure containers (various merchants, lockboxes) Sometimes you can just buy the EMP straight up if you find it. Go to crafting stations to composite them into bombs. Making bombs Now fly up to a station where they built the thing you wanna build. Fly out of your ship and hit that thing (eg. the ore refinery) with an EMP. Four little sparky things will appear. Spacesuit your way to each of them. Chances are that one of them will be the blueprint. You may take a slight rep hit, just get back in your ship and hunt down some 'criminals' near their bases to fix it. Using the bombs But wait!! Which part of the building do you hit? They all look pretty stationy.. Open the map. Zoom to the station till its nice and big. Maybe even right-click rotate the map if you want. On the left you have that info-dump to navigate. Top row, pick 'stations & all ships' (its the far left one you start with). Left column pick 'Object list' (its the top one you start with). You'll see the station you're zoomed in on and a little '+'. Click that to expand it out to see the various modules in there. Expand those out and click on what you wanna steel. It is now glowing red so you know what to fly too and bang! There's your blueprint! You can now build the stuff in those other tutorials, and you're at the 4x part of the game! Conclusion Ok! You are now at the 4x portion of the game. You have an economy, you have a starting base, you can afford the designs for the cool ships... Now just start looking at youtube videos for the cool guides on fleet compositions and management and all that good stuff. Captain Collins seems to have the most fun 'positive' (ie not my tone) videos on this game, but there's others. And from what I can tell the expansions to this game have a bit more hand-holding and 'fun' starts (but kinda expect you to know all the stuff in this guide) so maybe look into those if you now like the game. Captain Collins Good luck, keep calm, and stay shiny.

Your ship has 3 modes. Travel Mode, Scan Mode and Long Range Scan Mode. Shift+1 is travel mode. Use this to travel anywhere very fast. It's used for traversing great distances hence travel mode. Shift+2 is scan mode. Use this to scan stations, data leaks, asteroids and even other ships. Shift+3 is long range scan mode. Use this to scan for unknown stations, lockboxes and data vaults in a sector. Which bring us to our other topic. The universe. Its hidden when you first start. You have find everything yourself. If you open your map with M you can see it for yourself. There's only 3 sectors you can see right now. A sector is basically a solar system. To get to other solar systems or sectors as they are known in the X Universe, you have to use jump gates. This is how everyone explores the universe in this game. Take some time to explore Black Hole Sun IV and use your long range scanner to find stations and jump gates. To use your long range scanner, press shift+3 and hold R for 2 and half seconds and then release. If you hold it too long, it won't work. Hidden stations and jump gates will appear as a ? on your map and mini map. There's different types of stations in the X Universe. Each one produces different wares. To find out what the ? is, you have to get close to it. If you open your map, you can see your ship can detect things a few feet around you. We'll call this our detection range. To reveal a station or jump gate on your map, you have to get it within your detection range. Do this for all the stations and jump gates in a sector as they'll be useful later in the game. The 4 quickest way to earn money in X4 is to either sell unclaimed/abandoned ships, collect containers from destroyed ships, trade advanced satellites or to make Spacefly Caviar (1 million a pop. Needs to be crafted at a crafting bench in a traders corner on any station). To claim an unclaimed/abandoned ship, you just scan it in your spacesuit by entering scan mode (shift+2). Every ship in this game needs a captain in order for it to be useful. Therefore, you'll need to hire a captain for your ship and then transfer them to the ship you just claimed in order to sell it at a wharf. You can find a cheap one for less than 10,000cr. Claiming these should net you a few million easily. Just be careful; the game will teleport Xenon and Khaak near you if you stray far from stations. Here's where you can find all the unclaimed/abandoned ships in the game: https://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=405524 A good money making tactic is to buy advanced satellites at an equipment dock and sell them at a wharf. This is best done with scout ships of any kind. Its best done by remotely ordering your scout ship to do it rather than you doing it. To buy them, just left click your scout, right click on the equipment dock and click upgrade. Then go to consumables. To make Spacefly Caviar you need 25 spacefly eggs. These can be found near destroyed asteroids and ships or on the black market. Therefore, its ideal to go to a place a lot of AI miners are and look for them there. Second Contact II Flashpoint and the Grand Exchange are good spots. Or if you enter scan mode near an asteroid, you'll see orange spots on the ones highlighted. If you shoot these spots with your ship, the asteroid will release some of its yield. And if you're lucky it may spawn some lodestones, unstable crystals, and spacefly eggs. Battles are fought in the game all the time. Ships drop player inventory items once destroyed. Look out for Programmable Field Arrays and Spacefly Eggs. They are the most valuable. Crystal mining used to be the best way to make money. You can still do it to earn some decent CR. Update 4.0 introduced a crystal nerf. Once you have mined one crystal cluster of greater than base rarity, all other crystals you see for the next ~half hour will be converted to bandanite. Crystals can be found on asteroids. Here's a map of the universe so you can find some asteroids: https://roguey.co.uk/x4/universe/ If you have no DLC, your universe map will not have every sector shown here. There's different rarities of crystals that determines how much they sell for. Purple is the most common and therefore the least valuable. Vice versa for Dark Orange. Here's a list: Bandannite Crystal - purple - sells for 1000cr Menelaene Crystal - blue - sells for 10,000cr Aguilite Crystal - light orange / yellow - sells for 20,000cr Mitonene Crytstal - dark orange - sells for 30,000cr Once you find a crystal, just press the space bar to shoot at it. Crystals will break off. Press O to suck them into your ship. They will then enter your inventory. Not your ship's cargo hold. This is because crystals are a Player Inventory Item. These are all Player Inventory Items: Advanced Targeting Module AGI Heuristic Core AGI Neural Network AGI Processor Aguilite Crystal Algae Scrubber Argnu Steak Bandages Bandannite Crystal Bomb Launcher Burnite Crystal Carbon Filter Crystal Bit Damaged Singularity Engine Decryption Module Security Decryption System Security Slicer Delirium Digital Seminar Electronics Family Heirloom Fine Meal First Aid Kit Flux Capacitor Hallucinogenics Hand Laser Herbicide Hydraulic Pump Interface Unit Security Slicer Kyon Crystal Kyon Crystal Shard Kyon Crystallite Lodestone Majaglit Menelaene Crystal Micro-Gimble Micro-Motor Mitonene Crystal Mixed Fruit Modular Trigger Needle 5 First Aid Kit Nividium Crystallite Precious Ring Priceless Art Programmable Field Array Rapid Sand Filter Rare Spices Remote Detonator Spacesuit EMP Repair Laser Salvaged Electronics Secure Container Spacesuit EMP Security Bypass System Security Decryption System Security Slicer Sedative Sensitive Data Packet SETA Space Suit Scanner Spacefly Caviar Spacefly Eggs Spacesuit Bomb Spacesuit EMP Speed Upgrade Mk1 Speed Upgrade Mk2 Unstable Crystal To see how much your inventory is worth, press escape and then click on the little man icon at the top middle of the screen. And then click on the inventory icon on the left middle of the screen. Once you have enough items to sell to get at least 370,000cr, dock at any station and go the the elevator on the station and click on trader's corner. You can sell any Player Inventory Item here. If you can't find the elevator, just ask any npc where to find a trader. Passive Income Its a good idea to have some money rolling in while you're exploring the universe, scrounging containers, pirating pirates or running away from Xenon and Khaak. You know, there's these cool things called mining ships! I hear they mine and sell minerals for you! Wait, we have enough money for a mining ship so let's buy one! There's a wharf in argon prime where you can buy the Drill (Mineral) Sentinel and the basics it needs to mine minerals for about 370,000cr. You can only buy small and medium ships from a wharf. Or there's a teladi wharf in the Eighteen Billion sector. Whichever you want but argon ships tend to be cheaper. Once you found the wharf, open your map > right click on it and press > buy ship. Now the shopping screen should appear. Above your screen you'll see 3 block boxes with downward arrows on them. Click on the first and choose Size M. Click on the second and choose Drill (Mineral) Sentinel or Manorina (Mineral) Sentinel. Next, on the left side of the screen you'll see all the ship options you can choose to pimp out your perfect ship. We are just buying just the basics. Choose all-around engine mk1 > M all-around thrusters mk1 > no shields necessary in early game > M mining drill mk1 as the weapon > no turrets necessary => max the crew as Miners mine faster with more people. All options marked in red are mandatory for the ship so you have to choose those options. A pilot is mandatory in this game unlike in X3, X2 and X1. Next add the ship to your shopping list and press confirm order. The ship will then be built if the wharf has the necessary materials. If it doesn't, you will have to wait. Click on property owned on the left side of the screen, you'll see your ship being built. Once its built, right click on it > click on information > then behaviour near the i icon you'll see the default behaviour for the ship. Click on hold position and select sector local automine and then choose silicon as the ware. Click on anchor space, choose argon prime. Click confirm. Now the ship should mine for you and bring in that juicy CR. You can level up your pilot's piloting skills using pilot seminars. These can bought at any trading corner on stations. To use these, just speak to your pilot via comms. To do this, press M, click on property owned, click on the ship that has the pilot and press c. The ship will know how to sell the minerals by itself. If the miner doesn't sell the minerals, place an advanced satellite to encapsulate as many stations as you can. Advanced satellites remove fog of war and update station trade offers in real-time. But they are expensive in the early game. Also, put resource probes in each asteroid cluster. Only 1 per cluster is necessary. This identifies what kind of minerals are in the cluster. Your miners will use this information to mine faster and more efficiently. Now you can go do whatever you want. I would recommend claiming a ship or collecting containers near battles. We need at least another 370,000cr to buy another mining ship. Once you have enough, buy the same ship and make it mine in the same sector but this time choose ore. And then buy another one, this time make it mine silicon in Grand Exchange III, then buy another one and make it mine in the same sector but this time make it mine ore. Silicon is definitely more profitable though. This is the smart thing to do for passive income. It adds up. Anywhere there's a station that needs ore or silicon, buy a miner and make it mine in that sector. Those mining ships should bring in some decent CR and it also builds your rep with the faction that owns the station. Once you have at least 3 million CR, we can build our first station. Energy Cell production is a good thing to invest in. Once you enter the mid game, things will start heating up fast. Khaak will start attacking your mining ships, pirates will harass your traders more often and the Xenon will start taking over friendly sectors. This is a good time to start buying L mining ships (because of better shields) and investing in M battle ships to protect your stations and traders. Now's a good time to unlock the Player HQ. Once you do, the boron will teach you how to build a station by telling you to build a dock. But don't worry, I'll teach you anyway in this guide. Put some Energy Cell production modules on it when while you're at it and some container storage. Energy Cell production modules DO NOT need resources. It is free CR. Sell them for 10CR each. Creating Plots and Owning A Sector The Player HQ was a free plot. To start building stations in a general area other than near the Player HQ, you first need to claim a plot of space. Doing this in any faction's sector, will cost you some CR. Sectors with a grey border around them are unclaimed sectors. Its free to build here. How do you claim a plot? Press M to open your map. First click on a sector you want to build a station in. Click on Nopileos' Fortune. Now you'll see an oil rig icon at the bottom left of your screen. This is the plot managing option. Click it. Make the plot as big as you want and click create new plot. Place the plot anywhere you want. Congrats! You now have a new plot to build a station. Go to property owned and you now shall see the new plot. Rick click it and press plan build. Here you can build whatever station you want. Right now, we don't have a lot to build with as we haven't bought or stole any production, dock or connection modules. Every station needs a builder in order for it to be built. If you scroll down in the plan build menu, you'll see a bar that says assign or hire a builder. That's how you hire one to build your station. But you can only hire builders you see on your map that's not covered by fog of war. But now you know how to build a station. If you want a unclaimed sector to be yours, you need to build a defence platform. Once built, the sector will turn green. Yes, you need a create a plot for this. I recommend putting a plot near the gate that leads to the sector. The plot doesn't have to be big. The module you need to build one is an admin centre. Lock boxes and Data Vaults During your travels, you may come across these randomly. There are 28 data vaults scattered across the universe (not including any DLC). Who knows how many lock boxes there are. Data Vaults: Once found, park your ship as close as possible. Then, exit your ship and repair the pressure leaks around these using your repair laser. Once all are repaired, it will unlock. They contain goodies and if you scan the leak on the data vault, you can learn about the X universe. Very interesting. The goodies can actually net you some serious CR. Lock Boxes: Be careful with this one. Get close as you can. Now, all you have to do is shoot the red lock with your ship. It will now open, spewing out goodies. Some lock boxes contain more than one red locks to shoot. Again, just be careful where you shoot. Do not destroy them. Here are all the data vault locations: https://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=406314 Demonstrations: Mission for the Player HQ There's a story mission you can do to unlock the player HQ. To do it, all you need to do is go to any station and look for data leaks around its hull. You'll know if you found one because it makes a krrr sound and flashes red. Then, just enter scan mode and get close to it. Your ship should then decode it. He'll ask you to drop satellites and resource probes, so make sure you have some in your ship's inventory. You can buy these from any equipment dock or wharf. To drop one of these into space, press enter to bring up ship interactions and click deploy civilians. A frigate will spawn nearby the station that the decoy ship docks at during the boron escape mission. The type will depend on where you accepted the quest. If it was in teladi space, a teladi frigate will spawn and so on. Claim it and use it or sell it. You choose. You will need nividum to upgrade your teleportation range. However, 4.0 also introduced an nividum nerf so now its hard to find. Some can be found in Second Contact II Flashpoint and Second Contact VII. Hatikvah's Trade Revolution Do this quest line as soon as possible. You get given a free small trading ship and it boosts Argon military presence in Hatikva's Choice. This is good if you don't want the Xenon to take over Argon sectors. Plus, story missions are always fun. To start it, just go into Hatikva's Choice and accept it from your mission offers. Claiming the Odysseus Vanguard (Destroyer) Claiming this ship is worth >5 million. You can either claim it like all the others (scanning the data leak thanks to update 4.10) or by using the old way. Hire a marine. But using a marine will damage it. I would recommend a scout ship for this, the Elite Vanguard is good. Make sure you have MK3 engines. You need at least 1 marine to claim this. To hire a marine, just speak to any NPC on a station and choose to hire them as a marine instead of a captain. The unclaimed destroyer is in Faulty Logic VII which is Xenon territory. All you have to do is ram through the gate, in Holy Vision, to Faulty Logic I in travel mode at full speed so the Xenon can't shoot you. Then, make your way to Faulty Logic VII. Make sure no Xenon are following you. If you have MK3 engines, you should be able to lose them if you don't slow down. If it's just 1 xenon, the Elite Vanguard (fully upgraded), should be able to kill it. Once you've found it, right click on it in your ship and choose 'claim'. The marine will now board the destroyer. Or get out of your ship and find the data leak to scan it if do not want to damage it. Now, leave the Xenon sectors as fast as possible. Once you do, order your new destroyer to dock at a shipyard. The destroyer should make it back safe since OOS (Out Of Sector) travel and combat is different to IS (In Sector). Mines litter the sector but S and M ships are safe. The destroyer not so much. However, it seems mines don't work thanks to OOS shenanigans. Stealing Module Blueprints To steal Module Blueprints you first need to unlock the ability to obtain module blueprints from data leaks. Complete the Player HQ mission and complete the necessary research. Good. Now you can just fly up to any data leak on any station and hope the RNG gods give you the blueprint you desire. This is because any data leak on any module has a chance to unlock the blueprint for that module the data leak is on. Scanning a data leak on a energy cell module has a chance to unlock the energy cell module blueprint. However, you can force data leaks on modules by using emps. Triggering an emp on a module will create 3 or 4 data leaks on said module. You make get lucky and get the blueprint after scanning just 1. Scanning them all unlocks the blueprint for that module, guaranteed. This can save you millions in CR. BUT! There's one catch, they can be a pain to obtain. One way to obtain them is by crafting them. Here are the necessary materials to craft them: 1 lodestone 1 secure container 1 remote detonater Lodestones can be gathered near destroyed asteroids. Just follow your mining ship and check your map to see if any have dropped. Secure containers are dropped by destroyed ships. You can either fly to any npc station and watch for criminal civilian ships. They appear red. Destroy them and hope some secure containers drop. Or scout for a battle somewhere in the universe and wait for ships to be destroyed. Battles usually occur near Xenon sectors and near Argon and HOP borders. Remote detonators can be bought from black market dealers and destroyed ships spawn them. Scan audio data leaks and hope a black market dealer needs your help obtaining illegal goods. Then just meet up with them and buy all their remote detonators. You then use all these materials at a crafting bench in the trader's corner on any station. Craft a spacesuit emp bomb. Then buy a bomb launcher from the trader. I also recommend buying the mk2 spacesuit thrusters. All you have to do then is go up to any station module you want, get into your space suit, fly up to the module, press 2 to access your bomb launcher, left click to launch an emp bomb, right click on it and press trigger emp bomb. Quickly press shift+2 to enter scan mode in your spacesuit and scan the data leaks. You need to get really close to scan the data leaks. Scan all 4 of them. And voila! A free module blueprint. Now get back into your ship and fly away ASAP. Just click on your ship and press shift+D to open the docking bay. Fly into it. What Station Should I Build First? Good question. The first station you should always build first is something cheap but still fairly profitable. I always build a refined metal factory in Silent Witness XI. And then a teladium factory right next to it. I always build 1 factory for each type of ware rather than build a giant mega factory for everything. Why? Its faster for one thing and looks better. Building a station is like playing with legos. It's easy. First I'd recommend buying station connection modules and large (or medium) storage modules from any faction representative. Just ask a npc where to find their faction representative. There's one for each faction. Just bring at least 2m with you. Build 2 refined metal modules, 2 large container storage modules and two large solid storage modules. Then build a dock. Buy the 3M6S luxury dock ASAP. It looks good and it helps the AI buy as much as they want as fast as possible. Then build 2 energy cells production modules. You now need to give the station money for construction and assign it a builder. All this can be done in plan build mode. Just scroll to the bottom. You'll see it says 'manage buy offers'. Just accept the estimate and click confirm. You can also give money to your stations and builders using the account management screen. Click shift+i to bring up player info and you'll see a CR symbol to the left. Click it. You can assign miners to your station so they gather raw resources for it like silicon and ore. Just left click on your miner on the map screen and right click your station and press mine for commander. Assign it to any group. Only one type of ship can be in any group. Miners, traders and fighters can't be in the same group. There's two types of mining ships. Gas and mineral. Mineral miners gather ore, silicon, ice and nividium and gas miners gather helium, methane and hydrogen. Mineral miners need a mining laser but gas ones do not. Keep in mind your miners won't do anything until you assign your station a manager, have a storage module for the resources and have the production module built. To assign a manager to your station, just dock any ship with service crew at the station, right click on the ship on the map screen, go to information, scroll down to crew, right click on a crew member's name, and click work somewhere else. Now right click your station in the property menu and press select. And choose manager as the role. Click assign. Done! Trading Ships: Your Best Friend Trading Ships are mandatory if you want to make it in the X universe. You need them to build your stations quickly, to sell your station's wares quickly and to haul marines quickly around the universe. Personally, I'm a big fan of the: Vulture Vanguard. Its a medium ship. You can buy these at any teladi wharf. Use trading ships to build your stations quickly just left click on the ship on the map screen and then right click on your station that is being constructed and press trade for > trade for commander's build storage. Now the trader will buy wares needed to build the station. You can also get a trading ship to gather resources for the station and sell the station's wares. Click on the trading ship on the map screen and then right click on your station and press trade for > trade for commander. Assign it any group. Miners and traders can't be in the same group. Auto trade can be found in behaviours on any trading ship. It allows trading ships to automatically buy and sell any ware you wish them to. An npc with a three star pilot score is required to auto trade with your traders. So you can either buy a three star pilot by looking for one on npc stations or you can control them yourself by left clicking on your trader and right clicking on a station you want to trade with and pressing trade with. Further Help This guy can guide you through the game.

The game contains countless mechanics which are fully opaque yet punish the player for not knowing them. This guide provides an overview of these mechanics. Overview You haven't heard the Tragedy of X4 the Opaque? I thought not. It's not a story Egosoft would tell you. It's a modder legend. Modders are so powerful and so wise they can force X4 to reveal information. They have such a knowledge of the game, they can even play it without Google. Modding is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. It is possible to learn this power, but not from gameplay. X4 contains countless mechanics which are fully opaque yet punish the player for not knowing them. These mechanics can only be gleaned by either reading the game code or learning it from someone who has read it. Simulation Modes High-attention is the current player/camera zone and its neighbours. Zones are at the maximum case cube sections of space that extend up to 50km in every axis direction. The closest zone center to an object determines the zone it is considered to be inside. If an object leaves the cube without entering a new zone it creates a new temporary zone at its current position and this zone is deleted when all objects have left it. The system only tracks the location of its neighbours rather than direct distance checks. High-attention therefore may vary between 50km and 150km in a bell distribution. For a reasonable and easily understandable approximation, this concept can be simplified to a bubble with a radius of 100km centered on the player/camera. The "camera" includes the location of the Live Stream and an NPC when opening communications with them. Everything within these bubbles is "high-attention" (HA), which is fully simulated. Everything outside the bubble switches to a much more simplistic "low-attention" (LA) simulation. "In-sector" (IS) and "Out of Sector" (OOS) are misnomers using terminology from previous games. They had loading screens between each sector, while X4 creates the above bubble instead. The IS / OOS terminology should be replaced as it is misleading to new players. The same situation has very different results depending on the simulation mode. These differences are so vast that each mode functions like an entirely different game. For instance: Mining — Individual asteroids are not simulated and collision does not exist in LA. Simplified collection and movement therefore makes LA mining significantly more efficient. Combat — Ship turrets only have a 30% chance to fire in LA. Ships heavily relying on turrets, like all Xenon destroyers, consequently have significantly reduced DPS in LA. The difference between their combat effectiveness in LA vs HA is night and day. I recommend the below mod to solve this specific problem. Similarly, very effective HA weapons may become useless in LA, or vice versa. It is truly like playing different games. The LA Combat page of my other Steam Guide provides more information for combat. Known mitigations: OOS Turret Fire Chance Change — Reduces Xenon's critical weakness in low-attention. Mining Penalty A hidden mechanic which checks if your mining ships are within 40km of a resource probe owned by you and silently applies a 50% penalty to the final result of the efficiency calculation if they are not. Players are unknowingly hamstrung by this mechanic as there is literally no way to learn it exists in-game. Vanilla has no automatic method to deploy resource probes, so it is extremely tedious to avoid the penalty without mods. If you know the penalty exists, there is no indication if or when it is applied to your ships. The range of the penalty and probe also do not match. The penalty range is 40km, yet the displayed probe radius is ~90km. You receive the penalty while being inside most of the range. Even when using a mod like Satellite Service to automatically blanket the entire sector with probes, it is still possible to receive this penalty because the probes are deployed on one plane. You would therefore receive the penalty if the ship moves >40km above or below the probes. Covering the entire sector with probes also reduces performance and visually clutters the UI. A ship with empty service crew slots further reduces efficiency because they contribute 0 to the combined skill value. Marines do not contribute their skill. Skill value is used for everything and has an enormous impact. Always keep your ships at full service crew and never use marines unless you are actively boarding. Vanilla's inclusion of marines in preset loadouts is a noob trap. It implies marines are necessary, yet in actuality it significantly reduces the ship's performance. Known mitigations: Vanilla — Manually spamming probes. Satellite Service — Automatically deploys probes, greatly reducing tedium. No Mining Penalty — Directly removes the penalty. SETA Player Rank Decay Using SETA while AFK triggers a hidden penalty which causes your player rank points to decay. Faction reputation and player ranks are separate systems. Player ranks are only used for the following Steam Achievements: Captain of Industry & Combat Pro X-Treme Trader & X-Treme Fighter Earning the X-Treme achievements is functionally impossible due to the insane logarithmic scaling, but this hidden penalty likely makes it literally impossible. I don't know the specifics of this penalty because the code is not available to modders. Source of knowledge: Developer confirmation on Steam discussion page. Known mitigations: Simulating mouse input to prevent AFK detection. Crystal Nerf Mining a valuable crystal immediately downgrades all other crystals in the sector into the least valuable type and starts a hidden timer to prevent any other crystals from spawning. The code documentation states: Cooldown on "valuable" drops, defined in minutes. If set, collecting one of these will prevent new "valuable" spawns for the defined duration. Entries without a cooldown are considered "not valuable" for the purposes of this cooldown. Egosoft introduced this penalty to discourage crystal mining, as despite being incredibly boring, it became the early game meta due to being easy and insanely profitable. Nerfing it was a good idea in theory, but their chosen implementation just moved the meta to another badly balanced mechanic and actively harmed players by punishing them with a mechanic they can't know exists. It is particularly reckless because there are so many guides in the community encouraging crystal mining. Players could assume it's outdated and no longer relevant, but Egosoft hiding the nerf greatly reduces their chance of discovering it and accordingly wastes their time. I don't recommend mining crystals in either vanilla or with the below mods, but you're free to do as you want in your sandbox. Known mitigations: Crystal Rarities — Removes the hidden timer and buffs the spawns; very cheaty. Disable crystal cooldown timer — Removes the hidden timer Kha'ak Torture Mining activity accumulates a hidden "heat" value which attracts the Kha'ak. Player-owned mining ships build twice as much heat as NPC-owned miners. Kha'ak "teleport" to any location without the need of travelling through gates. They actually spawn out of thin air, typically right on top of the offending miner's head. If your miners are under constant attack, it is likely an Outpost has spawned in the sector. Outposts spawn ships within the same sector. Outposts spawn within 3 jumps of a Hive. Generally the Outpost spawns ~400km away from the center of the sector, which is likely beyond the border. However, the hex will zoom out and rescale to accommodate crossing it. Destroy the Hive before the Outpost. Destroying them will require several destroyers to do it in a reasonable timeframe due to their absurd health pool. Hives can respawn after 96 hours. Outposts can respawn after 48 hours. The timer is much shorter if player-owned ships do not destroy the station. They do not respawn at the same location within the sector. The Hives can only spawn in 9 specific sectors, but only 6 of these sectors can contain a Hive. Since Hives can only exist in 6 of 9 sectors, destroying a Hive might move it to another sector if the local mining activity of the new sector is high enough when it respawns. The 9 specific sectors are: Antigone Memorial Black Hole Sun V Company Regard Heretic's End Lasting Vengeance Matrix #451 Open Market Pious Mists IV Silent Witness XII Although it's easy to keep them suppressed with the above knowledge, the entire system is hugely unfun. Kha'ak spawning out of thin air leaves little room for counterplay aside from using L miners. It's also a slog to clear the nests since they spawn so far away and have very little DPS yet enormous health pools. Kha'ak design also disproportionally harms new players. It is impossible to learn in-game, yet the solution is trivially easy once you learn it from external sources. The station's absurd health pool also punishes them with extreme tedium, as they will probably only own a single destroyer at best when it first spawns. Known mitigation: Knowledge Spawn Begone — Changes Kha'ak spawn mechanics to be less frustrating. Kha'ak Finder — Automatically finds Kha'ak stations. No Kha'ak Torture — Removes Kha'ak from the game. Bail Chance A ship's crew only has a chance to bail once every 30 seconds if their ship's hull and shield are under 75% and 20% respectively. There is a hidden penalty to the bail chance if your ship has higher maximum hull than your target. The ideal capture method is to damage the ship to 74% hull and then keep tickling its shields to keep them under 20% without damaging the hull again, while using a ship which has a maximum hull value equal to or less than your target. For non-Xenon ships, scan the ship first, then check the crew number every 30 seconds. Once it has 4 crew, the next successful bail roll will cause all remaining crew to abandon ship, thus allowing you to claim the ship. Claiming it transfers ownership to you. Claiming bailed S and M ships with marines destroys non-mandatory equipment with the chance scaled to their boarding skill. Players must endure the tedium of personally claiming every ship to avoid this hidden penalty. I strongly recommend removing this mechanic with the below mod. Exact formula: Vanilla rolls a bail check when a ship receives damage, limited to once every 30 seconds and if the target is below 75% hull and 20% shields. Base eject chance is a range of 23-46%: inversely proportional to the target's crew skill Multiplied by (targetmaxhull) / (mymaxhull), capped to 1.0 Multiplied by (myshieldperc+myhullperc) / (targetshieldperc+targethullperc), capped to 1.0 Reduced to a quarter if attacker is not personally flown by the player Reduced to a half if target is capital ship Reduced to a third if target is Xenon Known mitigation: Knowledge Bail 30s -> 10s — Reduces the tedium of waiting for bails. No Bail Penalty — Removes maximum hull difference penalty. No Claim Damage — Removes the hidden marine claim damage mechanic. Shipyard Penalty Ships sold at player-owned wharfs and shipyards have a penalty on sale price to slow down the snowball into infinite wealth. The ship price is calculated by: Cost of components * 5 (with ~15% variance based on supply) The penalty is 70% when the slider is at 100%. So, even with this penalty, you're making 50% more than the components alone. The penalty is also only 55% when the slider is at 150%. It would catapult you into infinite wealth far too quickly without the penalty, since selling ships would be 5x more profitable than their components. The profit is also only limited by your production capacity as ships have near infinite demand. It is therefore a necessary bandaid for the unbalanced economy. Known mitigation: No Player Shipyard Penalty[www.nexusmods.com] — Lessens or removes the penalty. I don't recommend this mod, but players should be aware of the penalty and decide for themselves. Conclusion This list is not exhaustive. Although I've made this other Steam Guide to help other players learn the game, it is difficult to learn these mechanics since they are in fact hidden. This guide does not include the dozens of factoids which are impossible to learn in-game, as I simply don't have the ability to find, remember, and summarize so many of them. An example of such a factoid is the effect of defense drones in low-attention. There is a common misconception that they do nothing. It is a reasonable assumption since they are not visually launched and their effect is not indicated anywhere in the UI. However, drones do contribute to the low-attention battle simulation despite giving zero feedback for it. In low-attention, drones both increase the DPS of their owner and absorb incoming damage. Further, it does not include the mountain of mechanics which are unclear or confusing to new players, such as: scrap processor cooldown, pirate cover system, logarithmic scaling of reputation and ranks, scanner tiers, station budget scaling to storage capacity, sector ownership rules, and so on. X4's design is unfortunately rampant with obtuse opacity. I chose the most important concepts because we'd both be trapped here forever if I tried to explain every hidden mechanic.
