Scan the belt for glowing veins of Iron, Copper, Titanium, Platinum and rarer finds (such as the mysterious Vyrexium ore), then carve the ore out and watch the rock break apart under your beam. Sell your cargo at stations, upgrade your ship, and push into denser, richer, more dangerous
