This guide will help any sperg who needs to understand medicine quickly in DayZ. The Basic Sicknesses This section will consist of the 2 pretty basic and most non-lethal sicknesses in DayZ. They're fairly common and decently easy to contract, but serve only as a small annoyance to the player. The Common Cold Probably the most basic sickness out of every single one in the game. You get this from being too cold and running around in the rain or simply cold weather. Or some mongrel coughing in your mouth or violently making out with you while you are sick. Symptoms Coughing Sneezing Treatment Tetracycline Pills Multivitamin pills (boost your immune system to 100%) Natural immune system, though it will vary from how low your food and hunger are. Wear some warm clothes or just sit by a fire. Influenza Same thing as the cold except it has an extra symptoms. You can get this from other survivors sneezing down your throat, drinking or eating the same stuff from the infected person or just being exposed to the cold for too long. Symptoms Coughing Sneezing Fever (raise in body temperature and some blurry vision) Treatment Tetracycline Pills Multivitamin Pulls Natural immune system Staying warm Infected Meat Poisoning Similar to cholera and salmonella in nature. This happens at a 60% contraction rate after eating either wolf or bear steak. The rate heightens if the survivor has a lower immune system (food, water, temp). Symptoms Vomiting Grunting/groans from survivor Treatment Multivitamins prior to eating. This can prevent the sickness all together if you simply keep popping them while the food and water bar is still going up. But be mindful that the 60% dice roll still occurs once the pill symbol has expired. Charcoal tablets. Tetracycline Pills. ^ Use all three in tandem to have a stacked effect. The Moderate Diseases Next step is the more moderate diseases in DayZ. These sicknesses are more potent to your immune system and have more severe effects if not treated, so its recommended that you treat these unless you want a higher chance of death or a real annoyance. Cholera This is the disease that you get when drinking contaminated or unclean water. Basically do NOT under any circumstances drink water from a bottle that you found on the ground randomly or on a survivor, as there is a 50/50 chance of you contracting cholera from this. Any water that you find in a house, empty it all out and then refill the bottle with clean water. Symptoms Vomiting (this will drain your hydration and food levels a lot, so avoid drinking and eating in large amounts) Increased hydration drain (your hydration will drain quicker with movement, so try limit your movement if possible) Slower movements (after your hydration bar hits the yellow mark, you will have reduced run speed and audible groaning) Treatment Tetracycline Pills Multivitamin tablets Natural immune system (this takes longer to work, as the disease fights the immune system harder) Consume food and water in very small amounts to offset the sickness' effects. If you have chlorine tables, you can purify possibly contaminated water with these. You can fill your bottle with pond water and drink it as much as you want, just be sure to use chlorine tablets with that water first. Salmonella Basically cholera but more potent and has more ways to be infected from it. The way you contract salmonella is from eating raw meat and fat, drinking/eating with unclean hands and eating rotten food. If you have a high enough immune system (above 90% on food and water), you can drink and eat as much raw meat and pond water you want. Symptoms Vomiting (vomiting with salmonella is much more common than cholera and you'll know if you have it cause you ate raw meat) Treatment Charcoal tablets Multivitamin pills Natural immune systems Don't eat raw meat. Chemical Poisoning This is what happens when you drink or are force-fed alcohol tincture, disinfectant spray, iodine tincture or gasoline. Avoid drinking any of the above or being force fed the above (force feed people it though, its funny). Also don't eat burnt food. Symptoms Vomiting Energy loss Water loss Fatigue Bleeding Treatment Charcoal tablets Multivitamin Pills Waiting for the poisoning to run its course Metal Poisoning Contracted after drinking snow or non-chelated water in Sakhal. Be mindful that chlorine tablets will not work on fully purifying water in Sakhal. Symptoms Two stages of Hydration loss over the course of 30 minutes. Initial stage begins 15mins~ after consumption of contaminated water, then a rough 15mins later to the second. Frequent shivers Health loss once the survivor hits stage 3 of the sickness. 2hp/s until the survivor dies. Treatment Chelating tablets applied to bottle prior to consumption of contaminated water. Filtering bottle. Unsure-- Prior to 1st stage, there is a possibility by consuming vitamins, tetra and charcoal tablets all in one may prevent the sickness stepping further, while also maintaining high food and water. Pneumonia This infection begins once the survivor has contracted cold or influenza, and hasn't maintained food/water/temperature or taken the appropriate medicine to cure the initial stage. It can begin two ways. Cold -> Flu -> Pneumonia Flu -> Pneumonia Generally it will start from a Cold, which if left untreated can turn into Influenza. And in turn, if the Flu is left untreated, then Pneumonia will set in. Secondary method is if a survivor already has the Flu, and infects another survivor with the flu. Wearing masks of various kind can reduce the chance of spreading the virus, as well as social distancing and not drinking/eating the same products the infected is consuming. Do not trade gloves/masks with them either, as that increases infection chance. Symptoms Sneezing Coughing Fever An occasional hoarse gasp of air Slower stamina regeneration Health drop that will kill the player in 20mins~ Treatment Tetracycline Multivitamins will not work alone, but can help in prevention and will add a small boost in pair with a tetra pill. The Severe Diseases This is where the disease get very serious and will consist of 3 different types. These are the ones that have the largest consequences if left untreated or prevented and can result in the players death if not taken action quickly. Brain prion disease/Kuru Congrats dumbass, you're now a cannibal. Eating human steak, fat, guts or drinking/eating food or water with unclean hands after skinning a survivor. (WEAR GLOVES OR CLEAN YOUR HANDS, or just don't eat people you vegetable). Symptoms Tremors (shaking hands when aiming down sights) Uncontrollable bursts of laughter Treatment A bullet to the head Nothing else Don't eat people you sperg Wound Infection This is what happens when you patch yourself up from bleed with non-disinfected rags, bandages or sewing kits. Wound infection can also occur if you let the wound heal naturally and allow it to blood clot. Use disinfected rags, bandages and sewing kits to make sure you're all good. You'll know its a wound infection when the infection logo looks mad. Symptoms During stage 1 of the infection, your character will make a persistent sound of pain, the screen will blur and your stamina will regenerate 50% slower. Stage 1 lasts for about 20 minutes. Your survivor will groan and make audible sounds of pain when infected. During stage 2 of the infection you will make noticeably louder sounds of pain, the screen will blur more often and your character will have a fever. In addition to Stage 1's stamina regeneration being 50% slower, your hands will begin to shake, and you will dehydrate ten times faster all while losing 0.75 health every 13 seconds. This means that if you have full health you will die within 40 minutes of reaching Stage 2. The infection lasts forever unless cured by other means. Treatment During stage 1, use any disinfectant to kill the infection. Or you can use tetracycline pills. During stage 2, you cannot use disinfectant. Your only way of curing the infection is by consuming tetracycline pills. Gas Poisoning One of the more serious diseases in the game, if not the worst besides brain prion disease. This will occur for going into the gas zones without a gas mask or NBC gear (wearing a gas mask will negate effects besides bleeding, its recommended you wear all protection or just avoid the gas). Symptoms Stage 1: On Zone Entry- Any amount of exposure will result in any blood collected from you will become tainted. Bleeding will occur shortly Stage 2: 25 seconds after entry- Coughing every 20 - 40 seconds, Causing 50 Blood damage Vomiting every 3 - 5 minutes, Causing 250 Blood Damage. Stage 3: 1 minute, 20 seconds- Knocked Unconscious and 3 Health damage per second until dead. Treatment If you are still on stage 1-2 of the gas poisoning, using the PO-X antidote will immediately cure you of gas poisoning. Using the PO-X on Stage 3 will wake you up from unconsciousness and set it back to stage 2. Using a non-tainted blood bag-IV outside of the gas zone will cure the survivor of gas sickness, but it will not cure the survivor if given a tainted bag. Tainted blood bags have no ill effects and simply give back blood. Using tetracycline pills if you are still on stage 1 can help cure gas poisoning. Acute High Velocity Lead poisoning Either on the beach, in a military camp or in a city; nothing is stopping your fantastic RNG of attaining this sickness. You just pray to god the person who is the cause, is a ♥♥♥♥ shot, hits something not vital or is using a low cartridge weapon. Symptoms Death Bleeding Health Damage Fractures Treatment High food and water for health regeneration Being smart and cautious of your surroundings Kill the other mf first Exotic Sickness A few exotic illnesses, ones that are different from the basic disease of DayZ. Hemolytic Reaction This occurs when you give or receive blood that is not compatible with your blood type. Hemolytic results aren't overly serious unless you or your mate are low on blood, which can result in a lot of blood loss. Symptoms Blood damage Bleeding/blood loss Treatment There is no way to treat this disease besides being well hydrated and having a lot of bandages, the disease must run its course for it to be cured. Fractures Fractures or broken limbs happen when a player receives enough shock damage from projectiles, blunt damage, high falls or repetitive falls from heights. It results in the player possibly being knocked unconscious or receiving a lot of shock damage. Symptoms Constant audible groans of pain Slowed movement speed and limping Unconscious state from pain Treatment Crafting a splint with 2 short sticks, 6 rags or one full bandage. This allows the fracture to heal in 10-15 minutes. Letting it heal naturally, but this takes much longer. Using codeine pills and morphine pens can allow the player to run at their regular run speed.
