How to win most maps in 4 cycles. How to win most maps (that are non trick-based) on hard mode in 4 cycles. Why 4 cycles? Cycle 4 is the earliest on hard mode when you can get a bad-tide. A bad-tide flowing through your base river means that all your crops and trees will die, which sets you back greatly. If you are able to redirect a bad-tide by cycle 4, the game has no means to challenge you further, aside from increasing the drought/bad-tide duration. Definition of win: - Reservoir / water supply to last 10-15 drought/bad-tide days - Bad tide fully redirected This is a guide to remind myself when I pick this game back up in future updates. Always play Folktails. Phase 1: Cycle 1 before the drought. Pause, set workhours to 20, up builder count to 4, place 5 Lumberjack Flag, designate cut tree Starting set of buildings to aim for: (not in order, order determined further below) - 5 house - 4 inventor (1 on normal priority, 4 on low priority) - 1 water pump - 1 water tank - 1 farmhouse Look at water flow, figure out: A. can starting water source be dammed before first drought with ~<5 dam pieces? B. where can a bad tide be redirected C. where can a reservoir be created Unpause in short bursts as needed to figure out water flows. If no for A, build farmhouse, pause construction and put 3 on farmhouse to plant a ~10x10 patch of carrots before first night. Then pause farm to go back to construction. Water pump, 2 inventor, 4 house, 1 water tank, 3rd and 4th inventor, 5th house. By the first drought, build 3 more water tanks and a second water pump to ensure you have 4 filled water tanks to last the drought. Carrots should be ready for harvesting shortly before the first drought, put 3 on farmhouse, set farmhouse to prioritise harvesting. Build 1 medium warehouse to store up the carrots. When you run out of carrots, harvest berries to tide you over. If yes for A, ez-mode, build 2 inventor, farmhouse, water pump, 3rd inventor, 4 house, 1 water tank, 4th inventor, 5th house. By the first drought, build the dam. No need for extra water tanks, just micro the water pump on and off to optimise labour. Tips: - Match your builder count to wood surplus, if wood surplus < 2, you have too many builders, deactivate some to send them to other jobs such as science research or berry harvesting. - If the one water tank is full, deactivate water pump temporarily as well. Phase 2: Cycle 1 drought - Cycle 2 drought Lumber Mill, Power Wheel, 1 Small Pile for plank, 1 Large Pile for log. Forester -> plant a huge mass of Pine Tree, you should cover roughly 1/2 - 2/3 of the available radius of the forester. Your forester should be planting full time without stopping until cycle 4. Rationale: - Oak is more efficient, but it will not mature before cycle 4, which we should have won the game by then - Two foresters is too much for the population before cycle 4. You won't have enough beavers to harvest them all. An exception is if there is really a limited amount of trees spawned on the map, then you might as well spend more time planting trees. Dam off your river with levees and floodgate. Levees cost less wood than dams, and you can store up a higher height of water with them. Keep expanding your Lumberjack Flag to reachable areas with trees. Keep 2 in farmhouse constantly, with planting as priority. Plant a ~4x4 of sunflowers for the +1 happiness. Put down a campfire to ensure your working population is past the 5 happiness threshold, and teeth grindstone, medical bed as necessary. By the cycle 2 drought, you should have a dammed river with enough water to last droughts even with 1 continuous water pump. With 2 in farmhouse, all water and food needs will be met continuously with no interruptions. Build houses 6th and 7th. Tips: - Ensure you have as close to water level 0.95-1.00 when drought starts. Oftentimes, you can't leave your floodgate at 0.95 without flooding. What you can do is to raise your floodgate to 1 when ~0.5 days is left on the clock, as the water sources' strength decreases steadily as it draws closer to the drought, so it is less likely to cause a flood. Phase 3: Cycle 2 drought - Cycle 4 bad tide You have 2 full cycles to redirect the bad tide and build a reservoir. Good luck! Tips: - Build a Hauling Post, set to 1 worker high priority. - Keep expanding Lumberjack Flag to reachable areas with trees until your Pine forest is ready for harvest - Instead of building a reservoir, you may get 6 water tanks instead, and switch off pumping during droughts. - Don't bother with gear factory, medium water tank, etc, the game should be over by cycle 4 Pro tip: - For far away constructions, instead of building a Builders' Hut for additional builders, instead build small piles roughly 60%-70% distance towards the construction site. Set small piles to "Obtain" and increase worker count in Hauling Post. Hauling Post workers carry twice the amount compared to builders. As haulers stock up the small piles from your home pile, builders will source building materials from the closer piles. If balanced right, effectively, each Hauling Post worker has twice the efficiency of a Builder for the construction job. Examples of cycle 4 game complete:
