Takeoff from cliffs and trees: Just run of the edge of a cliff or tree and you will automatically start flying. This will be your main mode of taking off. The reason being is that latching won't let you recover stamina as fast as regular resting. Taking off by jumping costs stamina, so always try to find a cliff or tree where you can rest and takeoff from :) Gliding: When you glide, just use a + d to change direction and get a feel for it where you look with the camera as this dictates where and how you turn. a lot of people think about gliding as the default traveling mode. Don't get me wrong, its definitely doable and ads to the immersion but i use it only to slow down and prepare when engaging or hunting chickens/rabbits. Sprinting: This makes you fly way faster but at the cost of stamina. Behold, there is a way to cancel the stamina cost for it. This will be covered later in the guide. Save the day: Sometimes you will just crash into a tree, run off a cliff and it wont work out to glide etc. Save the day by hitting spacebar to start flapping your wings and glide again. Congratulations, your are now ready to explore the isle :) Food and Water Food You have multiple ways to feed yourself, some are more reliable and make sense then others. Schooling fish - α Just fly low enough and use LMB or hold RMB and release it in the right moment to grab a fish. Practice the LMB pecking style as its safer to not glide over the water. Beware of crocs. Spearfishing - α You can spearfish at shores, rivers and ponds between 4:30 and 20:29 by hitting right mouse button. It will take 30 ingame minutes (one real life minute) for the fish to appear. Once he is next to you and has the blue glow click the left mouse button. Beware, yo can troll other Pteras and pick their fish as well when it passes you and its in your range while spearfishing. By the way: the 20% stamina thresh hold applies to spearfishing as well, so if you want to regenerate stamina make sure you are above 20% Beware: Fish rots extremely fast! Clams - α You can pick up clams in mud puddles by spearfishing or you do it at the beach by turning towards the shore instead of the water. You have to crack them open on a hard rock with LMB but they dont rot at least that fast. Nice snack during travels. I tend to not use them anymore as the small pterodactyls don't attack you now during flight with food in your mouth That was the real deal because clams were not attacked by them. Chickens - β This is where the fun begins. So when it comes to protein the most reliable way to get it is by hunting chicken. You get behind them while gliding and now you are able to direct them where they are running away. Either you get really good, dive and try to peck them on land or you just drive them off into water. This trick is extremely efficient and lets you peck them like fish which you are already used to. Best place for this is delta imo. Oh and you can just chase them while sprinting, but its a waste of stamina. (Video coming soon) Rabbits - β I have managed to grab a rabbit only once on land, and that was only because he was stuck between rocks. Just drive them off into the water :P They give much more meat then chickens. Turtles - γ To get some fatty acids: Down to the beach I'm strollin. You can do it while airborne and be hitting their head for tons of damage but what I do most of the times, s just run behind them and poke them to death, even though its inefficient. Guess I'm to lazy here. Just beware of the seagulls Scavenging α, β, γ Let others do the work, watch them fighting, enjoy the scenes and just pick off from cadavers. Sometimes there are leftovers of organs so you can enjoy all nutrients for perfect diet. Water You can drink (by holding "E") pretty safely because once a croc jumps on you, just jump as well and take off. The danger lures mostly from behind so don't forget to take a break here and there to check your surroundings. Even better when you do it while approaching water and scout the place from above. If you are flying with another Ptera, position yourselves back to back or face to face for better coverage. Short reminder: The 20% stamina thresh hold to regenerate again applies here as well. Sometimes drinking is bugged and nothing happens. Just press "G" to unlock drinking again. Or spacebar for a little happy jump :D Saltwater What I tend to do 99% of the time when spawning is to get the saltwater mutation instantly. It opens up the map completely and is the best fallback. It's your insurance. You can live on an island and drink saltwater and spearfish all day if you want, if that's what you crave for. Just watch the sunrise or sunset for the vibes. As you start at the dam/water access I tend to orient myself by sniffing and fly directly north, down the dam to the beach and drink saltwater. You need 37 gulps of saltwater to get it. The moment you drink saltwater there is a debuff which is called "fluid deficiency". Drink those 37 gulps until its gone, pick your first mutation "Reniculate Kidneys" and be a happy beach dweller. What to do if you vomit? It depends, sometimes you still make the 37 gulps, sometimes not. I tend to not waste my energy to get to the salt rock south of the dam. Instead, I head straight to the lake, drink a bit and go down to the beach and finish the job. If you start this at night or in the evening you need to plan ahead. Either catch schooling fish or prepare yourself by spearfishing at the beach. Remember 20:29 is last minute spearfishing. Now you know everything you need to survive. But there is more :) Advanced Flying (Unlimited Stamina Sprint Cruise) Unlimited Stamina Gliding is to slow for you? Are you sitting all day in trees recovering stamina? No more! I will teach you the unlimited stamina cruise :) (Video coming soon) Please watch the stamina bar and key strokes carefully during the following training videos Dive Sprint So maybe some of you noticed by chance, that when you hold shift to sprint and do a dive with ctrl, there is no stamina cost for a short amount of time while sprinting. This "dive sprint" is the foundation of what comes next. (Video coming soon) Tap Dive We can save even more on altitude by holding shift, look downwards and tap "W", hence "tap dive". This cancels stamina usage as well, is extremely fast and altitude efficient. It's also way easier to hit "W" then holding shift with the pinky and trying to reach ctrl with I don't know what finger. (Video coming soon) Turning Now lets try to turn by holding shift and moving left and right. Don't forget to tap dive before you start and in between. (Video coming soon) Climbing Lets try to climb efficiently by holding "W" and looking slightly above the horizon. If you climb by holding space bar you fly straight up, lose momentum and the stamina drain starts again. Don't forget to tap dive before you climb for maximum efficiency. (Video coming soon) Cruising above 75% growth At 75% growth and above (as a frail elder!) the cruise technique is very straight forward and has to be initiated only once, as seen in the first video of this section. As long as you don't lose speed (by releasing shift or climbing to steeply) you will sprint without loosing stamina forever. When you start from high places like cliffs, trees or even updrafts this is an extremely efficient way to traverse the isle. As a prime elder this peak starts after 87,5% but i need to verify (take it with a grain of salt). Cruising as juvenile and prime elder As you grow, your max speed increases as well, adding another variable into this minigame. This means that we need to tap dive constantly to counter the delta between our current speed and our new max speed. You can count wing flaps or get a rough feeling how long it takes until stamina is being eaten up again. Its difficult to give an exact number of wing flaps because it depends on your diet and therefore growth rate. Rule of thumb are 10 wing flaps until you "tap dive", but sometimes way more. Just try to anticipate. Cruise technique showcase: Migrating south in one take as a fresh juvenile Lets put everything together and migrate south as a fresh juvenile in one take. This migration can definitely be done in a more efficient way, but I wanted to showcase how powerful cruising is, even as a juvenile. The days of stamina regen simulator are over. (Video coming soon) Cruise technique showcase: Migrating to north island in one take as a fresh juvenile (Video coming soon) Cruise technique showcase: Migrating to volcano as a fresh juvenile (Video coming soon) Updrafts There are several useful updrafts which can be used to gain altitude. You can make use of "G" to just circle while climbing. But finish eating your food first before you spit it out. Checkout "Vulnona" for detailed information by ticking the "Air current" box under "Map Data": https://vulnona.com/game/map Note that Updrafts are active only during the day and as the sun rises east and sets in the west the active times shift as well from east to west. There is one exception though and its one of my favorite places: Volcano. The updraft there is always active, during day and night, no matter if it's raining or not. The location is gorgeous and has a pond for water and spearfishing as well as occasionally schooling fish. (Video coming soon) Air currents / Jet streams are wonky and I have not used them much so I wont talk about them. Quick turn Remember that you can turn sharply using airbrake. I will let you discover the use cases for that. Mutations My personal opinion Feel free to pick what you want. There is tons of stuff that don't work with Ptera or the benefit is laughable. I have tested all mutations (hidden ones as well) and came to the conclusion to keep it simple: 1st Reniculate Kidneys (Hidden saltwater mutation) 2nd Efficient Digestion (Your food drains more slowly / 20%) 3rd Sustained Hydration (Your water drains more slowly / 20%) Enhanced Digestion (Decrease nutrition decay rate) is a hidden mutation and also pretty nice as a third one but mostly on 2nd entomb. If you want to force it on first entomb run some water mutation as 2nd mutation. But it really "shines" only after entombing. This helps to keep the 15% stamina regen buff longer, while having perfect diet. But what bothers me is that it really becomes the mission to get perfect diet and keep it the whole time and it somehow contradicts the laid back and fun encounter playstyle of the Ptera. Again it forces you to "min max". I encourage you highly to experiment with all mutations as well and come to your own conclusion. I just enjoy flying way more, having fun encounters and stories to tell instead of chasing numbers on a build. It's just my playstyle and focusing on perfecting the basics as they are more important than clinging to little buffs. Remember: The most important Stamina buff is your cruising skill. Misc How much % of stamina, food and water do I have? There is a neat trick, just open the chat and hover with your mouse above the icons to get the exact number. Prime I'll say it out loud: I don't care for prime at all. Ptera does not benefit from it that much imho and it takes away the joy while playing. Min maxing in such a short timeframe of playing Ptera, as he grows so quickly, is just not worth the hassle. Nesting This will get an update maybe later as there are already plenty of good guides on youtube regarding nesting. PVP Well :D The only ones you can bother are juveniles, but when you pull it off, boy is that a feeling. Most important advice Have fun! And always be aware of Herreras. Because sometimes I like to hunt Pteras as a Herrera. Shout out To KrillBreak and Roof Korean for the fun testing sessions and special shoutout to my favorite crocodile which introduced me to this gem of a game :)
