Have you ever died through sheer negligence? Getting tired while hanging on cliffs or eating poisonous that you probably shouldn't? Well, I'm gonna share with you my knowledge on what's food VS. what's NOT food, as well as a few other tips and tricks I've picked up. Join me as we venture this vertical nightmare wrought with ancient power and vertigo! Foreword So you've crashed on the Island numerous times and cannot survive? Have you failed to climb several cliffs and fallen to your death? Have you died from eating poisonous would-be foods too often? Well you've come to the right place! My name's Wolfie and outside of PEAK, I'm a jack of many trades; survivalist, minimalist, all that stuff.. In this guide, you will learn the tricks I use to overcome some of PEAK's challenges, what foods you should be using and the most important thing; how to not die. Along the way, we might even uncover what happened to the denizens of the Island, the ones who crafted some Mythic Items and the Ancient Statues that were left behind. Running and Climbing So we all know the basics; running is always shift, jumping is usually Spacebar and all that. But sometimes, climbing is a little tricky. Climbing is just left click, but sometimes you need to run and jump to ledge and then climb to get to the top in which case, be VERY careful. New players might not know this but I'll include it just in case; everything you do aside from walking, eating and using items consumes Stamina, which is also your Health. be very mindful of how and when you choose to use it. Tips for Going Fast - Rule #1 Walking is for nerds! = What I've discovered in order to escape the deadly mist was that you can run and when out of stamina, you can run and jump repeatedly to cover great distances without having to walk. Mario 64, anyone? Well, it's the same premise. Makes traversing long stretches of flat ground a little less time-consuming. HOWEVER, don't do this if you have Extra stamina from food as it will drain it. - Rule #2 Climbing normally is boring! = Something I discovered as well is that you can climb smaller cliffs with little to no stamina. As long as you have at least a tiny bit of stamina, you can lunge up to the top of the cliff with the same force as if you had up to full stamina. Use your steroid arms to your advantage! - Rule #3 Be fearless! = In some areas, there are vines and chains that you can grab in midair. Don't be afraid to jump off from high places and grabbing a vine below; you will slide down it's length depending of the speed you were falling and not lose as much stamina as climbing a rock wall. The same is true if you jump off a cliff and then grab the rock wall behind you. Unlike the vine, the cliff face will slow your fall but can break your legs if you didn't grip if from high enough off the ground. - Rule #4 When in doubt, evaluate! = Sometimes, a ledge seems like it's unclimbable, when really all you need is to look at it from a different angle. Don't be prideful and don't be dumb. - Rule #5 NEVER exceed 30% of your stamina in equipment weight = This one it the most important of all. The more weight you have on your person [the brown bar on your stamina], the faster you'll tire yourself out. This adds up very quickly with Hunger, Damage, Poison, Fire Damage, Cold Damage, etc. Travel light for the best chance at survival. - Rule #6 ALWAYS cook your food! = Some foods grant you extra benefits when you cook them once, but beware! If you cook it more than once, that's when those boons start to diminish - Rule #7 Always be in a position when you can see the sky = For Ascent 5 and up, this is vital. The sky is your only clock. It can save from wasting fuel in your lantern if dawn is about to break. Altitude 1; The Shore Welcome to your demise! Not really, but this is your starting point. The only two challenges this area will present you with are your own needs and the heights of the cliffs. Given this is the first area you need to scale, it won't throw anything else that's super debilitating. To add to this, there are a few foods you can find if you choose to put your foraging or herbalist knowledge to the test: HERBS AND MUSHROOMSX These little buggers come in all shapes and sizes, growing all over the island up until the 3rd Altitude areas. spotting them is fairly simple, but that doesn't mean they'll be abundant sometimes. These berries are native to the Alpine area. But apparently, these little critters decide to bring them to the Mesa with them. Altitude 4; the Caldera This is the last hurdle before the final stretch. Welcome to the Caldera. No fruit or berry below this point can thrive here, but birds can and by proxy, you can too. There's no weather to watch out for, the only challenge here is the lava bed that can rise and recede every few minutes which can heat the stone closest to it. In contract to the rest of the island, you just need to cross this scorching lake. Only one food can be find up here; EGGSX These eggs are currently the only sign of life aside from us. They can only be found on the high ground of the Caldera. Sometimes they won't be at the very top, but it could give you an advantage to hunt some down. This is the heart of the Caldera where one last time, you must scale to the top. The only things you can find here are luggage and the items you're carrying on your person. You have about 450 meters left to go, you can't falter now! Altitude 6; The PEAK You made it! Rest now, weary scout, for you have mastered the elements; the sandy shores, the scalding desert, the vibrant tropics, the frigid alpine, the scorching caldera and even a literal volcano! There's nothing up here that can harm you. At every turn, the island tried to snuff you out, to which you said 'No'. CONGRATULATIONS! Know Your Enemies! These badges are your actual steam achievements; the more achievements you get, the more badges you can flaunt on your character. Now the sashes, these are the most important 'badge' any scout can have and I should know; I was an actual boy scout as a kid! In hindsight, that's probably why I made this guide; in order to help others while I reach those higher sash colours. Each sash colour is awarded after PEAKing on a specific difficulty. I'll give you brief rundown of each difficulty; Difficulty Name Difficulty Rundown The Math and Data Portion Total Modifiers in Numbers Recommended Inventory for Kiln [IF possible] Difficulty Rewards TENDERFOOT Need data. Need data. NOTHING. Anything your heat desires, really. This is a difficulty with no stakes. NOTHING. PEAK The base difficulty where a killer, apollyonic entity known as The Fog seeps up from the deep. Climb to the PEAK if you want to live! - The fog that chases you moves 27 meters every day. - From Noon to Sunset takes 3 minutes 20 seconds. Meaning every day lasts 13 minutes 20 seconds. - Fall Damage from 10 meters causes 2 units [or 5.56 points] of damage. - Hunger ticks occur once every 50 seconds [Death by starvation in 30 minutes]. - Bing Bong weighs 2 units [or 5.56 lbs] in weight. - Stamina takes 12 seconds to deplete. - Lava rises at 0.35 Meters per second. NO MODIFIERS. I would recommend 3/4 cooked honeycombs with 3 rope/chain guns! Tadpole Scout [Green Sash] ASCENT 1 Same thing as PEAK, but now Fall Damage is increased! A 10 meter fall causes 5 units [or 14 points] of damage. That's a 151.8% Increase from PEAK in Fall Damage! +151.8% Fall Damage I would recommend 3 cooked Honeycombs, a cooked Lollipop, an Energy Drink and 2 rope/chain guns! Eagle Scout [Gray Sash] ASCENT 2 This one adds the fact that Hunger builds up faster! Hunger ticks occur once every 24 seconds [Death by starvation in 14 minutes 24 seconds]. That's a 52% increase from PEAK's hunger. +151.8% Fall Damage +52% Faster Hunger TO COMPLETE. Raccoon Scout [Black Sash] ASCENT 3 This adds Extra weight on items! Bing Bong weighs 3 units [or 8.34 lbs] in weight. That's a 50% increase from PEAK! +151.8% Fall Damage +52% Faster Hunger +50% Heavier Items TO COMPLETE Mule Scout [Brown Sash] ASCENT 4 This adds he fact that There are no longer flares at the PEAK! NO MATH TO ADD. +151.8% Fall Damage +52% Faster Hunger +50% Heavier Items No flares at the PEAK TO COMPLETE Kangaroo Scout [Red Sash] ASCENT 5 This adds Frost damage at night! 1 unit of Frost Damage happens every 5 seconds. 50 units takes 1 minute 30 seconds [or 90 seconds]. Divide 90 seconds by 5 damage and you get 18 ticks. Divide 50 total damage by 18 ticks and you then get 2.78. Every 5 seconds, you take 2.78 Frost Damage, thus the night can deal 222.4 total Frost Damage. +151.8% Fall Damage +52% Faster Hunger +50% Heavier Items No flares at the PEAK +2.78 Frost Damage/5 seconds at night TO COMPLETE Owl Scout [Purple Scout] ASCENT 6 This adds the fact that climbing costs extra stamina! This difficulty is PERMADEATH!! This uses all the math from Ascent 1 to Ascent 6 +151.8% Fall Damage +52% Faster Hunger +50% Heavier Items No flares at the PEAK +2.78 Frost Damage/5 seconds at night +25% Stamina Cost for climbing PERMADEATH TO COMPLETE Goat Scout [Gold Sash] + Goat Horns BONUS SECTION; The Island's Origin As I Understand It I firmly believe the area was once used by the Aztecs. The Aztecs were ritualists and metallurgists based in what's now Central Mexico. Their rituals were all based around the continuation of life, which is likely to have led to the creation of the Cure-All and Pandora's Lunchbox, while their mastery over that and metal led to the Anti-Rope and Faerie Lantern items; all of these you can get from their chests and statues. Clue #1 Island Location; MictlanAs for the Island's location, I bring your attention to the constant plane crashing and the mist being its own, apollyonic entity. This points towards it being influenced by Mictlan, the Aztec underworld that because of the prophecy written in the clue below, was allowed to seep into the living world. This would make the Scoutmaster the avatar of Mictlāntēcutli [aka the 'Lord of Mictlan'], the God of Death. While there are no texts saying that if souls had to work together in Mictlan, but it would suggest he only goes for those who leaves the other poor souls behind, since abandonment at its core directly goes against Aztec belief and social structure. Given that the Scoutmaster was betrayed and abandoned by his group, this is very likely why the Scoutmaster is immune to the island's grasp. Mictlāntēcutli hunted the souls who left him behind and in turn made Myres immortal in Mictlan. Scoutmaster Myres then picked up the mantle and carried on his work. Clue #2; Prophecy and SacrificeFor the next part, the 5 campfires. This feels like a direct reference to the Aztec's 'Prophecy of the 5 Suns'. You see, the Aztecs believed that the sacrifice of a god created 5 suns; 5 separate eras governed by different sun gods, with this era being the Fifth Sun. With the last campfire being atop the ruins of a Teocalli or 'God House' leading to the base of the Kiln, it's a clear fact given that the Aztecs used human sacrifice to delay the Fifth Sun's destruction. This was because of Tonatiuh, God of War and ruler of the Fifth Sun. He refused to move along the sky unless he was paid with tributes in the form of blood sacrifices; sacrificing yourself in a multiplayer game grants you the Participation badge. This is because Tonatiuh's story embodies both Sacrifice and Struggle; the sacrificing part being the death in the Kiln and the struggle being climbing to the top of the Kiln. Clue #3; The Sun and StarsThere's an achievement where you have to stare into the sun with binoculars once you reach the Mesa to claim a badge with a 4-star constellation on it. It doesn't make much sense, given the fact that the sun itself it just 1 star, so where are the other 3? That's because it refers to the Prophecy of the 5 Suns and Tezcatlipoca, the good of the night and fate itself. It also has a tie to the part above; you see, Tezcatlipoca is the Aztec creator god who sacrificed his foot to the massive sea serpent Cipactli, so that the world could be born from his flesh. This in turn made him the ruler of the First Sun, which infuriated Quetzalcoatl, because he created men by flooding the bones of the underworld with his own blood. Quetzalcoatl struck down his brother, turning him into a jaguar and out of revenge, Tezcatlipoca destroyed the First Sun. Quetzalcoatl became the rule of the Second Sun, but he brought about the end of it due to conjuring hurricanes which devastated the land. Clue #4; The TombIn the new Mesa biome, you may come across a hidden chamber called the 'Tomb' with a golden idol of our beloved frog Bing Bong resting in there. This is referencing two things; the first being that the Aztecs would commonly make hidden chambers like this to worship their gods and the second being that the idol's power of eternal life is referencing Tlaloc, ruler of the Third Sun and god of life and rain. How his reign ended was with his anger unleashing a rain of fire, scorching the land which is consistent with the barren waste of the Mesa with almost no plant life or water. Clue #5; A Scout's WeightThe Aeronaught Badge was added in the Mesa update and it requires to you to strap 6 balloons on yourself and achieve flight. Since I've never had the displeasure of carrying a Scout's corpse, I'm using these numbers. A balloon is -2 units in weight [-5.56 lbs] and a balloon bunch is -6 units [-16.68 lbs]. 6 balloons total is what's needed to achieve flight and 5 can make you hover and glide. Thus, 16.68 lbs+ [5.56 lbs*2] = 27.8 lbs, which is 10 units in weight. The average weight of a human skeleton is between 22 to 26 lbs, which means the remaining 1.8 lbs has to be your soul. No living thing above the age of 2 weighs this little. The Result; We Reside In A Branch Of MictlanWhether this is eternal torment or a divine burden is unclear. What is clear however is that we never become one with the cosmos like the reward from completing Mictlan was for the souls who reached the top. This leaves only one plausible explanation; we are the Aztec variants of Atlas and Sisyphus, destined to climb for eternity for the fate of the world rests on our shoulders. This means that the realm we climb over and over again is a fragment of Mictlan, forged from its bones by the gods. If this is in fact a divine burden, that makes us celestial beings tasked with moving the Sun and Moon gods Tonatiuh and Tzitzimitl along the sky every day. And the living world will never know of us and maybe never worship us, the servants of the gods keeping their world from total annihilation.
