Useless Data Here below some info nobody asked for but interesting (kinda) if you like to read... in general. Best bases selection Many factors determine whether or not a building can become a long-term base for your gameplay; these factors can be summarized in: Internal services (bed, stove, a refrigerator, a workbench, many shelves, a courtyard to get fresh air when you suffer from "cabin fever" without worrying about wolves ...), External services (a hunting area for rabbits or deers, a fishing area, a coal mine, a wood for chopping wood, the ammunition factory, forge ...), in-map position (if it is at the map corner or in the center), accessibility (whether on the road or in the ass of wolves on a mountain and you need to climb up and down 3 times to reach it), resources of the region. If your gameplay provides a "base" where to store all the stuff you gather, I suggest the "Carter Hydro Dam" in Mystery Lake for its central position and its large store capacity. Alternatively, Camp Office. Quite central in terms of location, lacks store space but compensates with the possibility of going fishing nearby. From this region, the forge in Forlorn Muskeg is quite accessible but the ammunitions workbench at Bleak Inlet is a little more distant. Another good option is "Coastal Townsite" for its high capacity and access to fishing. Its position is very unfavorable if someone wants to reach distant regions, also the forge in Desolation Point is relatively distant. Other valid bases are the central farm in Pleasant Valley and the gas station in Mountain Town, however they are very distant bases, difficult to reach and with few services. Always passable as bases are the factory in Broker Railroad and the one in Desolation Point, keeping in mind that although extremely distant from many regions, they are very capacious and with good services. It is not recommended to seek stable bases in the Hushed River Valley and Timberwolf Mountain regions. P.S. "Distance" is a primary factor for a base. I have 200h of play, which 3/4 spent to move from one area to another. If you have to move large quantities of stuff you do it on foot without the aid of anything else. You are limited by how many items you can bring so you must carefully consider how to move, the amount of road to walk, the weather, the clothes to wear in order not to be too heavy and use less sprints but also too light and die as an ice-cream, whether to arm yourself or not in case you meet curious wolves. Example: I have to move items from "Mountain Town" to "Mystery lake: Camp Office". 1 I must not exceed the transportable limit or I will not be able to use climbing ropes. 2 I have the opportunity to recover in 2 caves and the hunter's hut. 3 I will therefore need the sleeping bag. 4 I will meet at least 1 wolf if i'm lucky so I have to be armed. 5 Having 3 indoor areas on my way, I can be therefore dressed lighter and worry less about the weather. Second example: I have to move the items from "Quonset Gas station" to "Carter Hydro Dam". 1 Long distance, I should not exceed the transportable limit or I cannot use the sprint. 2 I could have the opportunity to recover only in a trailer. 3 I can therefore avoid carrying the sleeping bag but I must not waste time or i could become a frozen steak. 4 Risk of encountering wolves in at least 2 places. I have to be armed. 5 Long road with few coverages. I have to be protected from the cold and take a look at the weather. Best Bases Those bases are compared with each other, and keep track of many factors including the distance with other regions and the "services" Mystery Lake Carter Hydro Dam: Perfect. You cannot ask for better for what the game allows you. Central location, capacious (full of lockers where, as civil people do, put your stuff and not throw it on the ground like bums), a palace (it is actually large), outdoor courtyard, a stone's throw from 3 hunting reserves, just a few wild fauna in the surrounding area , not far from the lake to go fishing. It is "relatively" far from the forges, but considering how many time you need those, it is fine. Lacks: It does not have a bed, it has a 2-seater hob. Camp Office: Excellent Practically as above, only that it has a bed, it is closer to the fishing area but it is much less capacious. Coastal Highway Quonset Gas Station: Very Good Good base for capacity and services. Relatively distant from the forge (it seems close because it is the adjacent region but you have to walks a very long road, the mine and the rest of the road to the ship) but still more distant than the one that you reach from Mystery Lake in Forlon Muskeg, 2-burner hob places, 1 bed, a stone's throw from fishing. Lacks: Quite far from other regions, the place is surrounded by wild fauna including bears and elk. Coastal House on Jackrabbit Island : Good As above only it doesn't have the workbench Pleasant Valley Pleasant Valley Farmstead: Very Good For capacity we are in, some beds, workbench in the cellar, a courtyard, fauna all around, occasionally a bear, 6-seater hob, little lake in the prossimity where you can fish. Distant position, especially if you want to reach the forge. Is by far the best base in this region. Lacks: The region is quite harsh, big and blizzards are common. The house is in the middle of nothing so, in case of blizzard, you could lost your way back home easly. Timberwolf Mountain Mountaineer's Hut: Almost Sufficient It has a hob, fishing access, bed and workbench. Nothing else. Position: inaccessible. Harsh region. The hut is not an interior, so if you don't light up the fire when is cold you could even die frozen. Little capacious. Super distant forge. Forlorn Muskeg "???" : Sufficient I don't know in this region which base is worse than the other. We could indicate Old Spence Family Homestead as the least worst but any cave in the neighborhood would make no difference. Discreet location, forge in the house and 2 steps from the ammunition workbench. Accessibility to other regions a point better only than Pleasant Valley. Lacks: There are no bases indoors in the area so you suffer from the cold, no better hob than a camp fire. Scarce capacity (few places to store objects). Mountain Town Orca Gas Station, Milton House and Paradise Meadows: Good I would tell you that these 3 bases are more decent than one would think. The real flaw is the accessibility from the other regions (you have to be a mountaineer to get there), therefore the distance from many regions, however it has excellent services and the three bases differ in just few things (the Gas Station is less distant than the others but less spacious, Milton House is more central and Paradise Meadows, more distant than the 3, has a workbench). is also relatively distant from the forge, not far from the fishing area. Desolation Point Hibernia Processing : Almost Sufficient Say a good base, if you don't mind being on north cap, not having access to fishing even if you live on the ocean and having a bear knocking on your door. Lonely Lighthouse : Sufficient It has what you need to set up a base but its location doesn't make it much different from the other one above: is more compact but it has a bed and a stove for your meals. Bleak Inlet Warehouse 5 : Good Aside from parkour every time to get in, it has excellent services and good capacity. Relatively distant from other regions. Lacks: herds of mangy wolves that roam the area. Recommended to Long Dark survival experts. Broken Railroad Maintenance Shed and Hunting Lodge : Sufficient By sufficent I mean self-sufficient. They are both on top of the horth pole but they have good services and good capacity. A guard bear roams the woods (try avoid). Forget about fishing. Ash Canyon Not even talk about be in the north pole, here you are already on the moon. Is a bit better than Hushed River Valley because you have 3 interior locations where to set up a base but travel across the map is complicated by the continuing climbing everytime. The wolves patrol the lower part of the region and the big games the upper parts, like bodyguards on the mountain paths. Fishing not allowed. Homestead's Respite: Insufficent Little and everytime you need to rerach it by climbing but quite close to the exit. Angler's Den: Insufficent Little and surrounded by wolfs, but central location. Foremen's retreat and miners folly: Worse than Insufficent On top of the mountain... litteraly. Low food, low wood and a grumpy bear has its home nearby. The welcome carped is made by old deers, wolves and other people bones so i presume it is not friendly. Hushed River Valley Worse Finally arrived at the worst region to set a base: No covered areas except the crystal cave. No service. No fishing area. Unexplored region worse than Timberwolf Mountain. Suitable for those who want strong emotions or a suicide will. The End Game Having to walk a lot and not always being able to stay on the phone checking the socials and pretending to walk in a straight line, I also had to think about what could be the end of this seemingly endless game: First of all, some resources are limited, so once we finish them, we will limit ourselves to "renewable" ones. We therefore exclude weapons. Guns and rifles will soon be without ammunition, even if they can be created in the workshop, gunpowder will not be infinite. Bow and arrows will become usless as we will finish the sticks and the bushes from which we create the arrows, cuz the bushes wont regenerate. The arrows surely we will no longer be able to create them because, although surrounded by wood (and snow) we need that specific stick that is given to us with the dropper vials. We will run out of Matches and we will have to start use the magnifying glasses, so at least field fire won't be a problem. The wood is obtained with the hatchet but in the future we will also finish the hatchets, cuz they will all broke. However the forge and the abundance of iron (in the dam there are at least 200/300 units) should guarantee us an ALMOST infinite supply ... no, wait, limited, but very abundant. However, we will be able to pick up the sticks that are found in the woods after blizards. We get the water from the pots or jars that don't seem to decay, so we're good to go. The food, having to hunt it, will be reduced to rabbit traps and fishing. Surely the fishing will be the one that will last longer as we can create hooks and ropes in industrial quantities. For clothes, one day we will have to rely on those made from fur and sew them thanks to the hooks we will create (the hooks and ropes will have a frightening importance in the future) But always in the distant future, no longer able to go hunting for fur, we will remain naked in the snow. So based on this, once almost all the resources are over, we will be: Covered only with fur (optional) With 3/4 pots Full of sticks (minimum 50) with at least 2 but also 3 magnifying glasses to light the fire we will eat fish every day our base will be the Camp Office for its direct connection to fishingWe will probably be at day 5000. We will have lived more than 10 years in the game, always among the usual polygons, condemned to repeat the usual things. An eternity of solitude and redundancy. Until, one day, the last rope of the last fishing hook will break. Then we will reduce ourselves to throwing stones at the rabbits. Probably naked.
