There might be better approaches to winning a standard game of Balatro with one of the early decks in the game, but the approach in this guide works well for me. I am going to assume you have already played the game and know the basic concepts of Planet Cards, Jokers, the assorted multipliers, etc. If you follow this approach, you should consistently win games. Note: This guide assumes you already know the basics (Planets, Jokers, Tarots, multipliers, etc.) of Balatro, and are looking for a strategy to consistently win a standard game. ✅ The Winning Formula – It’s Mathematical! Winning most standard runs comes down to acquiring Jokers that allow you to multiply a large number of chips by large multipliers. The most reliable way I’ve found to get there is to make sure you cover the three “Joker jobs”: A reliable Chips source: This scores extra points for every hand. A reliable +Mult source: A consistent way to increase your score every hand. At least one xMult source: Especially in Antes six through eight this can double or triple your score and turns a good hand into a great hand. Not having at least one xMulti in later Antes means you will probably lose. ✅ Things to Keep in Mind 1) Joker order matters (a lot)It took me too long to realize this. I assumed the Joker calculations always happened in the order that was most advantageous for the player. It doesn’t. In most cases, the Joker effects calculate left → right, so you generally want: LEFT → RIGHT: Chips / setup → +Mult builders → xMult finishersIf you think of your Jokers as an algebraic equation, and add the numbers first and multiply the numbers last, you will see the highest score as a result. 2) Card order matters too (played and held)This took me even longer to realize! The left-to-right order of your played cards (and I believe even held cards) can matter for certain effects. If you’re using Steel or Glass cards, experiment with rearranging the cards in your hand so the “multiplier” effects happen later. 3) Try to always have at least $25Try to grow and keep your money to at least $25 so you can earn the maximum interest. You will need this money for rerolls and purchases in later rounds. I typically approach money the following way: Step 1: Buy enough Jokers or other cards to clear blinds in two hands most times. Step 2: Let my money build to $25 to cover the interest cap. Once I get to $25, I don't go below unless I am feeling desperate. 4) Don’t skip Blinds by default Unless you have a Joker that increases a multiplier, playing the blind usually gives you more cash and card options than skipping the blind. There are exceptions to this rule that I’ll cover later. If you don’t skip the blind you have access to another shop visit for new Jokers, card packs, money, and a chance to test how well your current setup is scoring before you get to the Ante Boss. Times you might want to skip a Blind include if: The Tag gives you some sort of massive advantage or amount of money Your current build is already scoring plenty of points and there is a multiplier or other advantage for skipping You have a Joker that rewards you for skipping Blinds 5) Take advantage of “better than nothing” Jokers in early AntesSometimes, it is better to have any Joker instead of none at the start of the game. You can always sell them later. ✅ Things That Work for Me Your mileage may vary, but the following approach works for me: 1)Think of your Jokers as a three-legged stoolMy default plan is to acquire at least one each of the following jokers as a "leg" for my stool: Get one Chips Joker Get one +Mult Joker Get one xMult Joker I then upgrade each “leg” of the stool as better Jokers appear. Building the stool and playing the game like this is boring. And it wins. 2) Don’t try to improve the entire solar systemI’ll take free Planets when they’re given to me in Tarot cards or something, but I don’t try to level up each and every hand evenly. I focus on a couple of hands I can make consistently (example: Two Pair and Flush) and get the multiplier on those hands as high as possible. ✅ Exceptions to the Rules Ignore all of the advice above if you are: 1) Skipping both blinds in the first anteYou should be able to score 600 points at the end of the first ante without any bonuses. By skipping the first two blinds, you will receive jokers, cash, etc. that will make your game easier later. There also is not a law against restarting your run if you don’t like the perks you receive for skipping the first two blinds... 2) Being able to reroll the BossIf I can buy a Boss reroll power (like Director’s Cut or Retcon), I’ll do it even if it drops me below the interest threshold of $25. This can and will save you from a nonsense Boss at the end of an otherwise winning run. 3) Unlocking new Jokers, Vouchers, etc.If I see something marked unpurchased, I will buy it even if it hurts my current chances of winning. You need to purchase some of these to unlock other cards and jokers. Speaking of which, you should be: 4) Buying the "Blank" VoucherBlank appears useless because it is. But, and I don’t know if it is the number of times purchased or a random chance, it eventually unlocks (Antimatter, +1 Joker slot). It has been my experience you still need to buy the Blank Voucher in games where Antimatter is unlocked if you want a chance for it to appear. Conclusion Conclusion
