Nothing. If your Dwarfs have drink, food and shelter, they survive. That's it. Everything else is bonus. Feel free to explore :) No seriously, that can't be it, right? Oh of course not. There is plenty to explore in Dwarf Fortress, and seemingly endless details and nifty little tricks. But everything is optional. Food and shelter - if you handle those two, you know how to play Dwarf Fortress. If you are disillusioned now, good! Because it's an illusion that Dwarf Fortress is a difficult game. All the people writing books about what you "need" to do, and how, are most likely veterans enjoying all the details and possibilities, of which there are many. You are no less than them. Your Dwarfs live, and your little shabby sand castle, simple as it may be, will provide a home for endless generations. So feel free to explore any part of the game that you find interesting. Just stick with common sense. It's a world simulation, not an action film. Bonus points for being extra dwarfy :D Common sense examplesYour Dwarfs are unhappy? Well, maybe living through the trauma of seeing a friend die and walking past her rotting corpse every day is not so fun. Try keeping your Dwarfs alive and your corpses buried. People keep falling into water and drown? Maybe add railings for safety. You keep getting more and more migrants and can't keep up with providing food and living space? Maybe limit population size in the game options. It's called regulating migration - you know it from real life. Wow, either this game is %/&$# or your guide is. Look at what I told you in the beginning. It's a fantasy world simulation (and the most detailed one you'll ever find, because at this point you've probably seen about 0.1% of it). Anything beyond basic food and shelter needs to be explored if you want to find cool things. And you can choose where to look next. Maybe you want to explore Dwarf character traits and relations. Maybe you want to explore military and combat for protection. Maybe you want to explore building styles and architecture. Maybe you want to explore the most Dwarfy death trap you can think of. Maybe you want to create the most fancy brewery the world has seen and offer the biggest selection of fine beverages ever made. Maybe you want to see how many bee stings an elf in a cage can take. Maybe you want to build an underwater castle out of soap bricks. Maybe you want to build a university and research star constellations to bring knowledge to the uncivilized peasant humans. Maybe you want to look at the old legends of the past, because people have told many DF stories and will continue to do so. Maybe you want to build a swamp village with hemp cookies being the main source of food. Heck, there is as many possibilities in DF as the ocean has drops of water in it. It's up to you. The only way you'll ever run out of things to do in DF (or the DF community) is if you stop exploring ideas. I've been playing DF for more than 20 years, and I still keep finding things and experience situations in the game that I never noticed before. And it's amazing! Your experiences can be small, like a cat sitting in an open door, leading to ridiculous situations. Or a particular cool fight scene between a single Dwarf and an Ogre. It can be emotional, a tragic story of love and loss. It can be a struggle to survive. It can be world domination. It can be embroidering dresses with beautiful art. It can be vomit everywhere. It can be a wounded dwarf dying of dehydration while hanging over the rim of an open barrel unconsciously. It can be a couple deciding to marry amidst blood and death because they'd rather die together than alone during a devestating siege. It can be so many things. So so many things. If you have drink, food and shelter, you have all the time in the world to explore details and weave stories. If you care to look. So, is there more to the game than food, drink and shelter? Yes Do you NEED more than that? No. Those are the minimum requirements. Everything else is up to you. Step 5 (optional): When in doubt, go back to Step 1 Whenever you feel overwhelmed, remember: everything is optional. If the amount of stuff you look at is overwhelming you (and that WILL happen, even to 20-year-veterans), then look at less stuff! Take a step back and remind yourself: If you don't get it, just ignore it for now. You'll probably be fine. There is more to see in DF than you will ever keep in your head. Just look at one story at a time.
