The game automatically sort ingredients top to bottom, but the way it chose ingredients is actually from left to right. For best result, only place ingredients you need to the current recipe once You can dispose of rotten food in campfire, by moving it to a bowl, then (throwing) away that bowl. It will empty the bowl. You can use roasting as a way to reset the decay timer of mushrooms and meat once. Food with multiple uses like cabbage and smoked ham uses its whole stack when you cook with it.
